Bitcoin works on a digital technology platform, it depends entirely on internet data. So, no matter where they are in the space, just as they can connect to the internet, they can use bitcoin easily. In fact, traveling the entire solar system at the present moment is impossible, our technology can not meet.

Well i think so astronauts do have access to the internet in space. I think the further out they go in space the more time it will take to do the transactions. Because of the time it takes the signals to travel. So sending a transaction from mars will take about 4 minutes to process.

If they have access to a signal from earth and can relay it back then why not. It would have a delay if it was executed from the moon of 1.3 seconds but otherwise I see no reason it would be an issue.
Mars would be 3-21 minutes so still possible to use.

How would the blockchain synchronize across a universe well that is the realm of theory and the idea of a universal currency someday in the future of humanity.

The further you go, the harder it would be.

Information, like anything else, will only be able to travel at the speed of light.  So in the best case scenario you're talking about astronauts being able to send Bitcoin from one country to another over several minutes.  To Mars would be about 12 minutes ideally.  I don't know what problems it could cause the network if you were much further than that though (solar systems away, for example).

Yes, and as long they have internet connections and communications signals to earth then it is very possible. BTW, Internet is also present in space, I remember astronauts sent tweets from space before.

Well whats the use of it?. Im sure if they have and free time and internet they would use it for some maintenance related and not really interacting in the outside world live. and also the sattelites dont really cover light years distances to connect on web. They can use transmitters but only for the videos so that it can be seen in the NASA headquarters. Why would u even make transaction in space of they can't really withdraw it without ATM's.

The simple answer would be as long as there is an internet connection they can use bitcoin . And yes there is because astronauts can access it . What I don't know is how fast it is . You should search on google if you're interested, I'm sure google has it .

But right now NASA is working on highspeed internet on space . See here: https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2017/nasa-taking-first-steps-toward-high-speed-space-internet . If money become necessary on space they might consider using bitcoin .

as far as I know they have an internet even in space as they are probably using it for communicating with NASA from space so they can be able to access it but well, I am also curious if there's someone in space that an astronaut can send a bitcoin or where they can be able to use it and should they need to use bitcoin while in space ? I don't even think that they'll use it in order to send a bitcoin to their family Grin

Bitcoin satellite?
What for?

I can imagine a satellite with a small miner included so in case every damn miner quits the blockchain will still go one but sincerely never heard of this project.
And the cost to put something like that on the orbit and keep it there for a few decades at least are quite high.

Well the question is a bit ridiculous but virtually bitcoin can be used anywhere where there is internet. If the internet can be made available in space, then surely there will be no hindrance from using it there. But since mankind has no access to space yet, there is no need of the bitcoins there but maybe after 10 years if mankind establish its existence on space, then surely bitcoin usage will be a no issue.

Astronauts are people who are very busy to look at Bitcoin and besides they earn a significant amount in fiat. Though if Bitcoin would be a huge trend and seen as a convenient way to store and secure their wealth then might as well they hop in. Since Bitcoin's complexity which requires the time, a little bit of time maybe to study how it works though we do know that they have much more complexity to study than this actually and they don't feel the need to learn it.

Yes, but the main chain would still have to run without significant delays, at least with the current design and algorithms.

You can generate a transaction offline then propagate it to the network several minutes, hours or even days after you generated it, an astronaut propagating their transactions with the speed of light delay wouldn't be so much different.

But I can't see how a decentralized solar system wide blockchain would work

Your definition of 'space' is vague and can refer to other definitions of 'space' as well. But to be clear, the ISS provide internet connection to its crew on-board. It's worse than dial-up internet but is reliable for sending and receiving general emails. Basically, bitcoin can work in outer space if you have a wallet that only needs KB/s to receive tx data.

Just curious, since the Internet is mostly an Earthly thing... would astronauts be able to access and transfer their Bitcoins whilst traveling throughout the solar system?
If you can transfer data between two points in space, be that through light or something else, then yes, you are able to use Bitcoin in space. It's not that hard of a concept to figure out. All you need to be able to do is transfer data (a transaction) and have it be synced to the blockchain and you're good.
