I have set up Cyclos again so we can take a look at what it can do for us.

http://dvcstable02.devcoin.org:8080

So far it only knows of one currency, Devcoins (DVC).

It is easy to set up for one currency as you just change the name of the default "Units" currency it comes with.

Adding more could be complicated as there are a whole bunch of different types of transactions you have to decide whether your currency is going to want to be able to use, so first you need to understand what all those different types of transactions are for and what they do. Or maybe at least know which ones the default currency has set up and what its setups for them all are so you can set up another currency with the same capabilities as the default currency.

It can only do up to six decimals too, unfortunately.

Supposedly this thing has apps for various phones, and merchant buy buttons type of stuff for merchants to use on their websites, and handling for loans and gosh knows what-all else. (Ads pages for example, where members can advertise things they want to buy or sell.)

Notice we do not have a https certificate for devcoin.org but since the machine it is on is at a third party datacentre anyway the people hosting the machine can already anyway go in and hack or steal anything they choose, just like happened to sites that were hosted at linode or rackspace (or both) or wherever. So really using https might just lead to giving people a false sense of security.

THE MACHINE IS NOT IN MY PHYSICAL CUSTODY THUS I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER WHO CAN PHYSICALLY ACCESS IT!!!

Be accordingly cautious!

It can do virtual keyboard for password for login but that tends to make logging in very inconvenient so I have set it to only use that for the "transaction password" - basically a PIN type thing - used for actual transactions.

It seems to have hard-coded limit of 4 to 12 characters (pathetically small, choose well!!!) for passwords. I have not been able to find any configuration option for increasing that.

Could this be used as a solution for merchants to accept DVC?

Yes, exactly. But, in a paypal like way. That is, people will spend amounts from the balances they have in the DVCbank.

It has nothing to do with blockchains, so will not be any help in having people pay using on the blockchain coins.

Just DVCbank balances denominated in devcoins, not actual real "specie" on the blockchain.

Though it is java so maybe with suitable bounties modules can be made for Cyclos that do deal with blockchains...

I'm on board with devcoin and would like to include this as a checkout option on my website. I will look at this deeper tomorrow.

Did you ever figure it out?

If everyone is thinking outside the box, there is a new box.

I think quite a few "groups" did end up using Cyclos at least for a while way back when, but I think only for use by their own group-members.

In fact I think at least one group used having an account on their Cyclos site was how they tracked who was even considered a member of the group.

My own experiments with Cyclos somehow got sidelined or back-burner'd, I think maybe partly due to they were starting to make noises about making a commercial version, or maybe already were doing so, with concomitant decrease in support, maybe also in new versions, of the free open source version?

It is possible some groups might still be using it to this day if whatever ended up being the latest version was found to serve the group's purpose.

I suspect though that for some time now the advent of blockchains with native (as distinct from being klunky kludges implemented by means of smart contracts) token support has to new groups made things like Cyclos not really relevant anymore.
