Not with any known supercomputer in the world, or even multiple of them. Even the Tianhe-1 supercomputer would be pretty crappy for forging, at 7168 S1070 tesla gpu's, it comes to around 1.1 terahash per second, less than 1/8th or 12.5% of the total network power of Bitcoin. And anything faster doesn't even exist at the moment. Who says that the attacker must have a single computer? He could have the same setup that the legitimate users have: A bunch of crappy Chinese-build PCs. |

Um, no. Almost every supercomputer in the world has an Nvidia GPU or SOC/ASIC and nearly none have Ati GPU's. Check the top 500. http://www.top500.org/They are also superior in distributed computing programs like protein folding (F@H) or space research such as SETI, having up to 4-10x more performance than the equivalent ATI/AMD card. Businesses, governments, hospitals and research labs don't even use ATI cards for heavy calculations or projections; Nvidia has a practical monopoly with CUDA http://www.gridcomputingplanet.com/news/article.php/3792971/Nvidia-Chips-Power-Grid-Computing-Projects.htm. For Bitcoin mining, ATI are superior though. I have 40+ ATI cards bought for the sole reason of maintaining mining clusters. |

This is why they shouldn't let people like you with 17 posts come in here, I stated a good idea and with help from members we can start things, it's people like you who are going to halt the spread of Bitcoin You want a high post count? Fine. You should stop posting because you don't seem to think things through. You'll save the forum bandwidth and stop making yourself look like a fool. For example, thinking this through more, you're suggesting a mercenary group of hackers to try and reclaim stolen bitcoins. This is in my opinion a ridiculous idea, due to the nature of bitcoin, but at least then it would have sounded better. |

BTClottery.info's idea is a tad silly for reasons already stated, but there is an opportunity in that same general direction.
A "police force" is out of the question as they would have no legal authority and would thus any enforcement would be operating outside the law, but what about private detectives? Cyber sleuths that would specialize in tracing bitcoin transactions to a physical identity so that the justice could be handled by the local authorities.
Granted this has some road blocks. It isn't very hard to cover your trail well enough to escape being traced, and because bitcoin knows no barriers, political or geographic, there is a good chance that the criminal may exist outside of your local authorities jurisdiction. Its also not likely many police agencies would take your claim seriously. I think this problem will solve itself with time, but currently i think the best you could hope for would be a civil suit.
I'm not proposing any sort of centralized service, force, or agency, I'm just suggesting that there may be an opportunity for those of you who fancy yourselves computer forensics. Given you will likely only be able to trace a small number of under-informed individuals, perhaps you should charge a small fee upfront, then another larger fee should the person actually be found.
Just a thought. Still a bit silly, but getting better.
