[Ethereum] 32 mh/s but miner keeps skipping jobs

Hey everyone,

It's been a while since I've done any GPU mining, but the rise in prices of certain coins really got me back into mining. Last time I mined anything was Doge coin (in 2014), so it's been a while haha.

This is my graphics card info

Sapphire R9 290X 4GB - Hynix RAM.
GPU Clock - 1040 MHz
Memory Clock - 1300 MHz

With stock settings, I get about 29.5 Mh/s, but if I bump the GPU clock on 1100, I get 32-33 Mh/s

Either way, it seems that both settings yield poor results. I'm using Claymore's Dual Ethereum miner to mine Ethereum only (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1433925.0).

On my miner, I keep seeing "New job from xxx" but I barely see any "Share Found".

Those are amazing results bro, thats as good as it gets for Eth mining. Is your 290x already modded with theStilts memory straps??? Because I do not think any 290x would hit 29mh/s without custom straps.

Different crypto-currencies are not apples to apples comparisons ever. The rate of shares you get is perfectly normal for Ethereum.

Difficulty has been increasing rapidly with the exchange rate increasing. I recommend that you check your GPU using HWinfo and inspect any memory errors. If you are getting very few number of errors per 10 min interval, then I believe it is good. But if you are getting large numbers of errors, then it will probably cause issues on health of gpu and also number of shares sent to pool that you use to mine ETH.

For example I have more than 10 gpus. Exactly same brand and model, but some of them does not act well with specific core clock/memory clock so I have to either apply more voltage or reduce speeds and also reduce hashrate to get it stabilized.

This is a stock card. I haven't flashed any Bios on it.
I'm going to check if HWinfo shows any error.

Also, what's the best way to test an overclock? I feel like I need to have the miner running for 3+ hours to see a difference.

From my experience with mining ETH on 290xs, here are three rules.

1. Don't set memory clock higher than 1250MHz, it's absolutely not needed. Even with the core set to 1.2GHz, there is bandwidth to spare.
2. Tighter memory timings don't help at all, unlike RX480s. just leave them stock.
3. Clock the GPU as high as it will stably go for maximum performance. Or, just run the GPU at 1GHz and undervolt as much as possible to reduce power consumption.

I used to run all my 290x at 1000/1250 with vcore at about 1.05v, this reduced card power consumption to slightly less than 200w.

If mining ZEC, rule one and two is false, you really do want tighter timings and higher memory clocks for mining ZEC.

In 17 hours on stock (29.5 Mh/s) I generated 426 shares.

I boosted the GPU clock to 1160 and lowered the mem from 1300 to 1250 and I'm going to compare with the stock value. It's currently hashing at 32.7 Mh/s

16 hours later @ 32.6 Mh/s I already generated 485 shares. Not bad.
