Posting this for a friend 2000+ miles away who is hopeless with computers.

He recently got into BTC.  Downloaded latest MultiBit, wrote down his seed phrase, set his password.

Now it's telling him the password is no good.  He swears it's the right one.

Tried using Mycelium on his phone with the seed phrase.  It said it was correct, but zero BTC.

I can look up his address and see he has BTC in there, so it is unlikely he was hacked.

Any idea how to recover this?

Why didn't he try inserting the seed on MultiBit? If he can recover them this way he'll just send them to another wallet.
Also the community link at Multibit is broken you need to dig up on yourself if this doesn't work.

He tried the phrase on MultiBit, said it didn't allow him to go to the next page.

No, he was not hacked. But Multibit HD has a bug they didn't fix yet. For some reasons some people just cannot access their wallet anymore because "the password is wrong" (although it's not wrong).
Just you posted and searching in the wrong place. Please do some research in the Multibit area (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=99.0), hopefully somebody has found a way to get to his funds.
Moving this thread there would also be a good idea.

I had the same problem with the incorrect password bug. One important thing to keep in mind about Multibit HD is that their seed is compressed and not compatible with other wallets. It's normal that you see no balance when you have tried importing the Multibit HD seed into Mycelium.

There is a workaround described in that thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1733063.0

You have to essentially extract the private keys of the addresses holding coins and import them into another wallet like Electrum for example.

If you need any help you can PM me and I will walk you through the process of recovering your friend's unaccessible coins. Don't worry they are not lost  Wink

This is a fairly well known issue with MultiBit HD (Have a look around here at the "Password did not unlock the wallet" threads) Undecided

Basically, your friend has 3 options to get around this:

Option #1:
Install either "Breadwallet" (iOS and Android) or "Simple Bitcoin Wallet" (Android only). They are currently the only know bitcoin wallets that use the same Derivation Path as MBHD. So you can restore your wallet in either of these apps using your "wallet words"/seed. After the app syncs, he should have his full balance showing. I do not recommend or endorse either of these apps for long term use/storage of bitcoins, but merely as a way to get access to the coins so they can be sent to another wallet.

Option #2:
If no iOS or Android device, then he can try extracting the private keys from the mbhd.wallet.aes file using my python scripts.

Option #3:
If running python scripts is a bit too complicated, you can get your private keys the manual way:

1. create an offline copy of: https://iancoleman.github.io/bip39/ (instructions at the bottom of the page)
2. put your seed at the top where it says "Mnemonic seed"
3. In the "Derivation Path" section, Click the "BIP32"
4. For "client", select MultiBitHD (the "Bip32 Derivation Path) should say: m/0'/0
5. Copy all the "Receive" addresses/private key pairs from the bottom of page (you may need to click "show more" a few times to find ALL the "Receive" addresses used)
6. Now, chance the "client" to "custom"... and set the "BIP32 Derivation Path" to: m/0'/1
7. Now all the addresses/private keys listed at the bottom will be your "change addresses" (again, you may need to click "show more" a few times to find ALL the "Change addresses used.

Once you have the private keys, you can sweep or import them into another wallet, like Electrum
