Did you guys hear the ICANN news about them allowing people to register new top level domains using basically any word or words? Will we scrape together the $185,000 to register .bitcoin? Will Satoshi fund it? Is there any point to these new domains? Would it help Bitcoin? Obviously it would be extremely low priority right now, but someday? |

Bitcoin addresses contain a checksum, so it is very unlikely that mistyping an address will cause you to lose money.

We can't even scrape together $500 for a website and forum that functions properly. $185k is out of reach due to apathy.

It would be easier to have your own bitcoin DNS server to redirect to a custom domain.
Even that would cost of course, seeing how bandwidth and hardware aren't free...

It's a silly fad I wouldn't even pay attention to - .com .org and .net are the only ones that anyone cares about. Guy1: "Hey visit my website! http://myawesolmstore.bitcoin!" Guy2: "... (awaiting the cadential sound of dot com) ..." Guy1: "..." Guy2: "... is that like a website?" Guy1: "yea!  " Guy2: "ok! (visits myawesomestore.bitcoin.com)" |

IMO, it only makes sense for the person who controls bitcoin.com to do so. That way, 'foo.bitcoin' would also work if entered as 'foo.bitcoin.com', which lots of people will do.

Disregarding the very fine points other people have come up with, it shouldn't be .bitcoin. It would be .btc, no one would use a top-level domain 7 characters long.

I think you'll feel very differently in a couple of years. Do we only go to .com sites because that's all there really was before? I think there are many good points above. I actually think registering .bitcoin would be a colosal waste of money. I was just curious how others felt. But, .whatevers will become ubiquitous. |

You also make a great point, and it's certainly possible. I was a little hyperbolic saying "no one". However, I still believe that sticking with shorter top-levels would be a good idea simply for ease of typing in the URL. In a best case scenario IMO, .com would just be .c or .co, although at this stage in the Internet I'm sure most of the people versed in the Internet have muscle memory to type ".com" in at lightning speed. |
