Hey y'all,
So I've been suggesting to many people a power setup which includes a HP 1200w PSU for the PCI-e connectors and EVGA 650w GQ for the risers/mobo. Well it turns out the lower wattage GQ models uses inferior components to the 1000w+, as well as the G2 and G3 PSUs.
To get some more efficiency out of my setup, I installed a 30A 240V 60hz NEMA L6-30R outlet, and got a PDU for it it as well. The output voltage is in fact 240V according to multimeter, at the high end of what the PSU is rated for. Of all my PSUs, two 650 GQ's just died instantly, and one 650 GQ had some capacitors explode in fiery glory after 24hours (all died while not under load, and all worked fine previously at 120v). Luckily I could get the PSUs refunded. I also have a 1300w G2 running on this setup happily, as well as the HP Server PSUs. Because of price difference, shipping speed, and availability, I replaced the units with EVGA 850w G3's. These are running very happily.
Moral of the story, you can reduce the cost of your mining power by using server PSUs, but still make sure that you're getting a PSU whose quality matches the type of load it'll handle. It probably wont be an issue at 60% load 120v, but higher voltages or higher loads should guide you to better components.

i always get high quality psu such as corsair or evga oi don't get never a not notorious psu, if the psu break you are fucked, other components would break too i know this, the psu is the most important component of your rig

That's pretty much everything in life, buy quality, buy once. Learned the hard way so many times, buy budget cheapies, you'll be buying them over and over again.

I use only an 1200w server psu on my rig, no atx psu at all

Can't agree more.
Using 2x EVGA 1600w T2 PSUs for two of my rigs and an EVGA 1300w G2 for another. Totally overkill as even the 7 card rig only uses 920w, but at least I've got the reassurance of stability and excellent warranty service and duration(10 years) from EVGA.

1200w and 1500w server power supplies do just fine, and they will last longer than atx psu's. on top being a bit more efficient and less cables going all over the place lol #facts *edit* cant forget there much cheaper to pick up as well |

I've actually had very good results from Rosewill supplies & they are quite inexpensive.
I've been using some of them for 4-years now after mining on them 24/7 for the first 2-years of their lives.
I have had some fail on me within the warranty period but they have never damaged the rest of the system & Rosewill has always replaced them for me.
The first big batch I got in 2013 were the HIVE 750-watt (Bronze) -- I am running mostly PHOTON 750-watt (Gold) now & I am trying out a few QUARK (Platinum) supplies that I got on sale.

Although, I am very tempted to try those 1200-watt server supplies on future rig builds =)

You only get one PSU per 6 GPUs and more often than not it's cheaper than one of those GPUs. Why would you cheap out on the PSU to save pennies and risk thousands of dollars worth of video cards?!

EVGA 850gq and 1000gq have only Japanese capacitors, efficiency is great too. You cant go wrong with either one of them. Stay away from the lower models, 750gq and 650gq.

I have a mix of Corsairs for my 4 rigs. AX1200 that I bought used, two HX1200i's and an old Antec 1200w. I just ordered two more HX1200w's. Never had a problem. I'm trying to standardize on one kind of PSU for future builds.
I'd love to try one of the HP 1200w server PSU's but can't seem to find where to buy the breakout board. I know there are a couple out there. Don't want to hijack this thread, but could someone point me in the right direction of a good breakout board for these? Also are the HP 1200w's pretty loud?

server PSUs have a very small fan that is very high rpm. The fans are powerful and work to keep the PSU cool, but they are quite loud and have a higher pitched sound due to being so much smaller. That combination makes them extremely unpleasant to listen to constantly in your home/office. If you have a dedicated mining area that you don't live in they are perfectly fine as far as noise/pitch is concerned.

Here in the next few weeks, I should be posting a HP server PSU silencing guide. Removing the stock fan, faking the RPM signal, and mounting 2 silent 80mm fans on the top after drilling holes in the case for it. I'm using a corsair AX1500i. Fully digitally controlled, 8 separate 16 AWG pcie cables, whisper quiet and over 95% efficiency. It is the Rolls Royce of power supplies, capable of handling at least 8 GPUs with plenty of headroom to spare.
The power supply is the most important component and one worth spending a bit extra on.
