The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.

what really sucks about slush method is if your miner goes down in last part of round and you don't catch it in time, you get nothing for last 6hrs or work,, DOH!  Embarrassed
What's really awesome about slush's method is when your miner goes down overnight, and you put it back online in the morning 30 minutes before we crack a 14 hour block. Full rewards all around, yay!

Interesting, thanks for the link. But not surprising. I work as a senior network engineer for a company that manages 1,000's of servers worldwide with a product called Labtech. I was tempted myself to script out commands to run GPU and CPU mining during early morning local times for a few hours that would have gone unnoticed.

Someone did an experiement doing this and the most his companies data center servers could mine would have been about 0.46 BTC per year. Hardly worth the cost of one's job!

Quick question, is 100 Mhash/s good? I'm using a GTX 670 as the GPU, and I've gathered that they are much worse than AMD for hash rates, but I still seem to be getting a tiny estimated reward of around 0.00000050 BTC even after several hours of constantly mining the same block (it's been going for nearly 6 hours now, whereas I started mining about 3 ago).

In a word, no.  Even 1 Ghash/s is hopelessly inadequate these days.  At that rate it will be many, many moons before you have enough to cash out, and it will be only a tiny fraction of what you spent on electricity.

Quite honestly, you would be better off using your GPU for scrypt mining, where you are likely to earn rather more (but still nowhere near enough to retire on!)

Try www.scryptguild.com - there are others but that one works well for me.

only 3 years too late for that kickass gaming card to be any good for bitcoin mining.

Undecided something is up, my estimated reward is halved right now...

Back up to normal again, glad the round didn't end just then.

You have shares but they are stale, your hardware must have quit or network down.

Thanks for the responses!

My estimated reward is still being weird, though it's significantly higher than before (around 0.001 BTC compared to the previous 0.00000050 BTC 0.0). Is it proportional to the amount of shares I accept?

EDIT: And it's dropped a lot again!

I have for some time experienced considerable fluctuations in my hash rate at various times of the day, but with a downward trend.  This has often also affected my hash rate with BTC Guild: both have been dropping by as much as 50%, and never quite getting back to their original level.  But an interesting thing happened a couple of days ago:  I watched a one hour TV programme through my internet player, something I never normally do.  After a few pauses for buffering, the programme got into its stride and did not falter again.  Then I noticed that my hash rate on Slush and BTC Guild had both increased to the rate I used to enjoy, despite it being a busy time of day, and they have not fallen since.  The only conclusion I can reach is that my ISP had been throttling my bandwidth but then had to increase it to allow the TV programme to play.  Or perhaps I'm just becoming paranoid.  Anyway, it appears to have remained high some 36 hours after the event.  Perhaps I need to become a couch potato.
