https://news.bitcoin.com/contactless-smart-card-system-japan-bitcoin-hardware-wallets/

Seems like more and more companies, especially in Japan (which estimates that bitcoin will be accepted at 260,000 stores in Japan by this summer) are trying to jump on the hype-train and profit in their own ways (incentivize those w/out bitcoin to use their technology / buy bitcoin as it will become more and more convenient...)

Thoughts?

I hope that the Felica Bitcoin Hardware Wallet will be much more affordable than the other hardware wallets, such as Trezor. I badly wanted to purchase one Trezor wallet, but had to give up that idea as it costs around $100. There is no point in purchasing a wallet worth $100 to store $300 worth of coins.

Yeah, i agree with you. It is not wise and smart to just buy and put out $100 from our wallet and just hold around $300 worth of bitcoins. If i were you, i will just use paper wallet because they doesn't cost too much and they are just cost around pennies which is also the same with hardware wallet that are good for cold storage and securing our coins. If this new kind of hardware wallet is affordable then i believe that it will dominate other hardware wallets in terms of sales.

I haven't tried using a hardware wallet before but this is good news, especially since Japan is quite near where I am, it'll probably be cheaper once they export the system to us. You can always count on the Japanese when it comes to embracing technology. Really hope bitcoin becomes huge there and show the world by example how it can be integrated into regular transactions just like how Felica is being swiped to pay for fares, etc.

Yeah, for those without a hardware wallet, paper wallets really are the safest option. Still would be cool if you can just store it in a hardware.

Yes the price should be lower than the existing ones right now and it should be more innovative. It should be like something that can be easily used by everybody and afforded by all. Also, I hope it could be available worldwide unlike those current hardware wallets where it is hard to get your hands on them.

It's good to know that Felicia is having another smart contactless card in the form of bitcoin. However, as mentioned by company itself that waiting for confirmation is big problem in the payment process of bitcoin. If they are adding extra layer of centralised system to confirm payment instantly, then its like you have to load the card first with sufficient funds where the confirmed coins will be made available for next time you do a swipe. But I see a problem here, what if I want to make anonymous transaction and want to hide my money for xyz reasons? Then that wouldn't be possible. I'm again bound to Felicia terms and condition. It's not a big issue but still I'm bound! But it's good idea and hope to see it in reality soon with cheaper rates of course.

...

High Japanese quality would likely mean nice acceptance of a Sony hardware wallet.  And the Japanese know how to produce in great quantity, that alone would (probably) help push down the price of BTC hardware wallets.

Let's see if Korea's Samsung Electronics jumps into that space too.  If Samsung and Japan start mass production, that would be a very good sign that heavy-hitters think that BTC will be big.

I've always wondered why Samsung never jumped into the Bitcoin mining machine market...  It *seems* like they would crush all the smaller manufacturers.

Samsung is focusing on others priorities and mining machine is not enough big for an empire like samsung. Unless it's not mainstream, they are not going to expand in this niche. A mass production could be very good, but there is not a market enough big to start a mass production

Have you ever considered a LedgerWallet? The cheapest is ~70€ (But to store 300$ it is still useless I admit)
