As far as profitability goes, what was it like before Eth boomed?

I currently have 8 GTX 1070s and 1 1080ti mining.  I have enough Eth to currently pay recoup about 1/3 of my initial investment.  I planned on mining long-term(years) but I keep hearing about how mining will no longer be profitable once all the hashrate currently on Eth moves to the rest of the Altcoin market.   Any insight on this?
I’m getting solar panels installed that will cover my home and mining energy costs, going from $.35/kwh to $.12/kwh.  I know mining won’t make as much money, but if I can make more than $175/mo to cover my solar panel bill I have no issues with slowly recouping the rest of my money, especially if it's before another big boom.

So I ask, how profitable was mining before the boom and how do you think it will be like after it ends?
