Building 4x 7970 rig and having heat issues.

Hey guys,

I'm building a 4x Gigabyte Radeon 7970 rig in a Corsair II case. The cards peak at 77 when there are two of them, but when I add a third in between, the card temp sky rockets(there isn't much space between one card and another..)

Are there any solutions to this?

Adding a side panel fan or two directing air at the cards might help.

Gigabyte card run hotter than other manufactures. You need a riser and a big fan blow air over all four cards to help them out.

You could also try replacing the stock thermal paste with something of higher quality.  Might not help but it's worth a try.

I'm guessing the middle card is the one that's overheating? You should get some risers, but in the meantime, try undervolting and/or underclocking the card(s) until temps are safe (under 85C or so).

Anything up to and around 90c is fine for a GPU. Do your homework. People are paranoid but trust me, these wont be worth $20 in 5 years so they dont need to be run at some super low temp like 70c.

Most cards will automatically throttle at 100c or so thats the real upper limit...

I basically agree with cdog. I try to keep my cards under 85C now, but I've actually run a couple of them in the low 90s for several weeks with no problems. Even if you run the cards around 90C, they should still last a long time (maybe not several years, but long enough to pretty much become obsolete by the time they fail).

I was looking to acquire a Carbide 500R to host a 3 GPUs rig:
