I see that the Wall Observer thread in Speculation has been locked: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=178336

Is this intentional? This is one of the oldest and longest threads on this board, and part of the heritage of this forum. Banning it is sure to make more than a few people go "wtf..."

Because the op of that thread is no longer active and doesn't moderate off topic postings and as such it's now mostly full of idiots discussing alt coins day after day. Sick of seeing dozens of reports from that thread every day. Plenty of other pointless threads in Speculation to talk shit in. If you want to talk about alt coins then do that in the alt coin section.

There would have been more than enough volunteers to help you properly moderate that thread if you had inquired, but I get the impression from my own dealings that you guys aren't much bothered in fostering good relations with your members.

I hardly see any useful posts there. Full of spams and trolls. There was a user(bot?) who posts graphs and BTC/USD value. Other than them, only a handful of people "genuinely" discuss there.

Edit: @yefi: How would you do that? Other than opening a new self-moderated thread, I can't think of any other methods. You can assign staffs explicitly for that thread, but chances for happening that is next to zero. If you really think that thread is useful, tell someone with "a lot of time" to start a self-moderated thread. Ask a moderator before starting to avoid further issues.

The Wall Observer thread is in Speculation, so when you start using it for any off-topic thing that comes to mind, the posts get reported and then deleted. This has happened too much and for too long in the Wall Observer thread.

Maybe it'd be OK from our perspective to move the thread to Off-topic and then let people use it as they wish, but is that what the posters there really want? I just don't get the point of the thread. If you want to talk off-topic, you can create multiple dedicated threads in Off-topic.

We speculate that absolutely anything can affect the usd price. Everything is on topic.
We moved to a thread with more relaxed rules https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1991115.0
edit: on further thought, maybe 'we' didn't

I can buy video games with Bitcoin. Therefore I should be able to talk about the new Call of Duty game in Bitcoin Discussion, right?

That would be a much better solution, thank you. I'd suggested this in the past.

I'd prefer to see it unlocked and moved to off-topic. There is good stuff in that thread.

ESG, KYC & AML are attack vectors on Bitcoin

Agreed!!!! Move to off-topic, if necessary, or assign a new person to manage the thread, as many of us actively involved in that thread would be more than happy to agree to volunteer for such duties.

The thread is a historical masterpiece, like yefi suggested, and probably amongst the most ongoing and active "go to" locations for bitcointalk members to attempt to connect anything to BTC prices, including various activities going on in the alt space.

Sure, there are trolls in the thread, too; however, the thread seems to have historically been a catch-all kind of location to gather about bitcoin price movements, and also a way to attempt to make price connections.  Sure some folks would like to deny that some of the movements in the altcoins, ETH, ICOs, and other pump and dumps do not affect bitcoin prices, but those denials would be out of touch with the real crypto space world that we find ourselves these days.

By hook or by crook  - KEEP the Wall Observer thread alive...  please.   Wink Cheesy

Of course, we have to deal with ESG, KYC & AML, but each of them are attack vectors on Bitcoin to be avoided or minimized.

Hint: Wrong.

If that popular game suddenly included in-game payments in Bitcoin or something like that, maybe, because that could have a great influence on the price. If amazon or eBay started accepting Bitcoin, also maybe.

Some altcoin movements have considerable influence in present and future price of Bitcoin, most of the time much more than any walls that we could observe.

It's all pure speculation... but maybe you are right and the thread would be better in another section.

... I just don't get the point of the thread...

Indeed. That's obvious.
_______

It doesn't matter how many threads are started in off-topic. It's not the same. It's all about BTC/USD speculation, including even most of the off-topic stuff. Yes, idiots who continually posted about altcoins were annoying, as were anti-semites, FUD spammers, goldbugs, and other trolls, but at least the dialogue was honest and real.

I understand that since Adam no longer had control, it became a moderation nightmare, but it was still the heart and soul of the entire forum.

Perhaps now that someone else has taken the initiative to start another self-moderated wall observer thread, it can continue to live on in the speculation folder without causing undue distress and extra work for the moderators.
_______

Please don't delete what's left of the old wall observer. It's an important archive and reference source. I don't think some of the moderators really understand how important it really was.

It's asinine to lock the #1 thread by both views and posts (by a large margin). Obviously there is demand for this "chatroom style" thread. With "Wall Observer" locked, the #1 thread on bitcointalk will end up as some altcoin shit, lmao.

It probably makes the forum easier to moderate because it gobbles up a bunch of the shit posts instead of spreading them all around. (Although most shit posting is clearly the result of sig spam.)

If I was running things (y'all lucky I ain't) I would unlock it, remove the report button, and leave it un-moderated with a disclaimer stating as much. Ignore posting stats from it as well.

While you might have to wade through a lot of shit, there are decent discussions in there from time to time. Plus, you know what to expect before entering.

Oh well... what do I know?

I could create one, and would if someone were to get something like ChartBuddy running again.

It will not be deleted.

Irrelevant. Use the off-topic section, or better yet, an actual chatroom.

Yes, it's irrelevant what the community wants...

...if you don't care if the community abandons the forum.

Off-topic section... lawls. Good one!

The demand isn't for an actual chatroom, it's for a "chatroom style" thread. Wink

Most of the people that you are talking about are cancer, thus they are free to- and more than welcome to leave. Don't get me started on each individual, especially not r0ach. Only a few individuals were making proper posts the majority of the time, and some of them were worth reading.

But again... what do I know?
Good question. Looks like you don't know much. Cry

I'd rather read r0ach than some barely literate sig spam making the 3000th "Bitcoin mining, does it worth?!" thread (in the wrong sub-forum, of course).

Also, like I said, Wall Observer participants tend to post shit mostly in Wall Observer, instead of roaming free and posting shit everywhere.

But again... what do I know?

As much as I want to agree with your statement, I would be agreeing to relative privation which is a fallacious view. Regardless of whether those posts are genuine or not (and whether someone else, somewhere else is doing something worse), they are against the rules and as such can not be ignored. There is a lot more tolerance for people who genuinely post or post without signatures, but this does not give them ultimate freedom. Either the forum put in *heavy manpower* to moderate that section (or may it just misses me  Cheesy), or they just lock down the major source(s) of said rule-breaking.

Also, like I said, Wall Observer participants tend to post shit mostly in Wall Observer, instead of roaming free and posting shit everywhere.
The correct solution to that is: Ban them regardless of where they post shit.

Oh well... I'll leave you to it then!

I have never really followed that thread myself, however I understand that many have participated in and followed that thread over the years.

With the thread being over 17k pages, and 4 years old, I am not surprised that there are many off topic tangents within the thread.

It looks like there is a copycat thread and in less than 12 hours it has 48 posts.

In regards to a thread this popular, I guess I would ask if the off topic tangents, alt coin discussions, etc., are bothering those who participate in this thread, and if not does this thread harm participants in the speculation sub? Maybe posts after page 17212 of that thread will not count towards post count/activity if signature spam is a problem in that thread.

What if I create an Off-Topic -> Chat section which doesn't contribute to post count, is ignored from unreadposts by default, hides signatures, and has some additional unpaid mods pulled from the Wall Observers regulars? It'd be exempt from some of the rules in order to allow for the chatroom-like style.
