LTC and FTC mining profitability is quite high right now...

Hi I'm new here. I'm seriously considering investing in several different cryptocurrencies. Regrettably I don't really have the resources to buy a coin @ near 400 dollar American. I would like to get into some other more cheaper currencies. I've read the list on wikipedia of the various types like Goldcoin, Mastercoin, Litecoin etc -- 1st question -- would you guys recommend even getting involved in these cryptocurrencies?

Next -- how exactly do I invest in bitcoins or litecoins or other such currencies? Do I need a bank account? How do I set up a wallet? Any FAQ's I can use? Thanks.

You don't have to buy one bitcoin you can just buy 0.00000001 Bitcoin. In my opinion 0.00000001 bitcoin has far more value than any altcoin because i see no use for any of them.

For people who are simply buying / mining Altcoins to sell them for a (higher) price, they are obviously usefull. I see the Litecoin has reached about $4,35 right now. I didn't predict that a few weeks ago, but since the Bitcoin price is rising, the Litecoin is too. Also other Altcoins.

Great news for Litecoin miners that it reached this price though Wink

4 months ago LTC was trading at this same price and a much higher LTC/BTC ratio. BTC has since taken off but LTC is still sitting around the same price. When BTC hit the highs of 260-280 a couple months ago LTC was at almost 6 yet now its only worth $4. I see a huge run up to about $9-10 usd in the next couple weeks if BTC stays where it is

If that's true I think the price of a Litecoin is going to rise again Smiley

The current price is about $4,34 (according http://coinmarketcap.com/ ). It looks like it's only increasing as the Bitcoin is rising. So, I would say, let the Bitcoin rise Smiley

Completely opposite of the correct analysis you have there, as BitCoin rises LTC and other alt coins always decrease. When BTC decreases, then LTC and other alts increase. I think it's going to change in the future but that's the current trend right now.

In terms of USD, all cryptocurrencies have been rising steadily.

Why isn't it on it already then? BTC China has been around for years. So has litecoin.

The alts don't always decrease with rising BTC.  I disagree partly because in the past (last March and April after BTC broke 31 dollars) there were periods when LTC/BTC ratio increased with stable or increasing BTC/USD.

I posit that this has to do with the psychology of crossing the previous high.  Prior to last March when BTC was below 31 (the old high) and still recovering from its last big crash rising BTC/USD resulted in falling LTC/BTC.  Everyone was excited to see BTC rise and abandoned LTC, but once BTC broke 31 and pushed higher and higher the price kept getting more expensive and folks started looking to alt currencies (like LTC) to buy in the speculative hope that they could get big BTC returns by speculating in alts.  And/or those who had large BTC positions were looking to diversify especially as BTC reached ever higher toward 266 peak.  If this is correct our recent cross of 266 puts us in this same environment.  Folks who are putting funds in to buy BTC are saying " darn I thought I would buy at 300 or 200 but now its 400 and we may be nearing a top.  Or folks who have made alot in BTC and now start to fear a top is near and they diversify a bit.  This may not be the case but if it is we should see big rises in LTC/BTC soon.

unfortunately this is all a popularity contest. Litecoin has potential since it's faster than btc, meaning in theory it should be used instead, however, at the moment there is such a hype about btc, that ltc is getting behind. now regarding ltc on other exchanges.. well, i forgotten about the idea of ltc joinin mount gox. on top of that, btcchina has already surpassed it, beecoming the number one exchanger. but i think it's just a matter of time before litecoins are adopted by all the great exchangers. after all, ltc is like a shadow of btc, wherever btc goes, ltc goes too, difference is it probably wont reach teh same value but still..

While alt coin value is in part derivative of BTC I don't think the rise and fall of BTC will affect alt coins.

a rise of btc means more acceptance of the public regarding cryptocurrencies so.. it has its influence on alts, even if only a bit

Stratis: Same supply as Ethereum + Masternodes + ICOs + Bitcoin a Core Dev. 90% cheaper than Eth. Do the math.

Alt coins can become useful only when people give value to them!

+1

What is your take on Tagcoins? They seem to have some big plans and some backing to go along with it.

I'm really not sure why there's a million alts being developed. Surely the best way to move forward with crypto currency would be for everybody to get behind the one to get it into the mainstream. At the moment it's Bitcoin. Can somebody explain to me why there's a need for any more than one?

The mastercoin protocol being developed may answer your question.  Mastercoin is an alt that is being developed that has many features that both alts and BTC so far have not been able to offer.  Namecoin's story is similar in that it wasn't just an alt for speculation and a knock off of BTC. but sometimes I wonder if anyone is actually working on namecoin anymore.

Your very right though.  There are a bit too many alts and most of them are redundant.

So which is better between mastercoin, tagcoin, and worldcoin?

Mastercoin was released on 06/24/13 by "Mstcoin" an account made up for the coin to keep the developer anonymous. The developer has not been active since 09/12/13.
It has no websites accepting it as a currency, no real services, and will probablely end up like royal coin.. No nodes and no miners, you can trade it on crypsty, but you can't move it off the site because of the dead block chain.

Worldcoin is well established and accepted by sites.. but you've already missed the "early adopter" boat..

Tagcoin is interesting, it went to a lot of exchanges extremely quickly.. It makes you wonder if Mark Vernon is related to Paul Vernon, the owner of cryptsy..

How come the Bitcoin goes up and I still mine about the same dollar value?  Lets say I've been mining $4.00 USD a day.  The Bitcoin went from $80 to over $450.  But I still mine about that $4.00 a day.  I can only guess that the hardware out there is getting faster and its increasing the difficulty.  Another question is why hasn't the other coins gone up with bitcoin?  Thanks.
