According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

Basically, it's a wallet that lets you run a full node. It's that big because it comes with a full copy of the blockchain.

As for the benefits:

  • You broadcast your transactions yourself
  • You contribute to the network
  • It's arguably the safest desktop wallet available

I might be forgetting a few stuff, but that's about it in a nutshell.

BTC Core is programmed to decide which block chain contains valid transactions. Users individually run their own Bitcoin Core full nodes, which allows you to only accept valid Bitcoins.

Hope this helps  Smiley

Actually you can run core wallet with -prune 500 command line and it will cut all old bloks, so making database only 500 megabytes.
