Wow, Poloniex offers a lot of different currencies to buy.

With a time horizon of a few weeks to months, I'd say Ethereum, given that it's down more from its high this year than Bitcoin or Litecoin. I suppose Litecoin would be my second play but you can't be guaranteed the next move will come in just a few months.

I don't follow the dust coins but you could pick up a quick 1000 coins for very cheap and hope you catch a pop. It's just tough to know which of those coins might appear legit (and thus generate more demand) at some point in future...and of course you have to be paying attention to sell during that pop. These alt coins don't go far, be careful!

In my opinion, if you're beginner, it's better to learn and understand the market before investing.

After that, I'd suggest investing first in Bitcoin (and hold it).

I had to agree with habbear, there's no other coin that I can suggest to you.

ETH is on a hype now and it's possible that it can go up $1,000 and just like what's happening to bitcoin.

Price of ETH can also follow just like what happened to bitcoin.

I would suggest looking at https://coinmarketcap.com/ to give you an idea of what coins are out there and then coming to this forum and do some research on the coins that take your interest, then choose a few not just one as it is always better to have many options and diversify.

Just a word of advice, try to trade other alts first so you'd get a grip on how it works, that is, if you're not planning of buying and holding alts for the long term.

Besides looking at the cap, take a look at the alt's activity in the alts section here. It's a good parameter to check too.

I would go for ETH and Some for BTC. Prices are low now and with this upcoming scaling news prices might pump but it isn't guaranteed. If you are really eager to jump in on trading then better to learn the fundamentals so that you can able to spot out which coins you would really love to buy depending on your research and into your interest.

Best would be to search and find the coin for yourself, understand the risks. Do note that most of the people will tell you to buy something because they are holding particular coin. You can although try to hold one of the popular coins and on the other hand you can go for the less popular coins which can bring more in return (but risk is higher here). Do note that it is hard to predict the market we all can just SPECULATE but this is not 100% for sure what will happen rather it is something that we wish/want and something that could happen. If we knew the coin with best returns be sure that its price would already be high for now.

1 Try to get a lot of information about your interested coin that gives the more explanation about the future development of the project.
2 never try to put all of your amount in one basket.
3 Try to invest in the coin that has big coinmarketcap, that gives you the more volatility and you will be able to see your portfolio increase as fast as possible.
4 never try to buy the suspicious or mlm coin.

The amount is really good, 2000$ is a good amount for startup and to invest in something.
You will get many suggestions from us, new ideas, but I wanna ask you something? Are you aware of trading of coins? or Just you are interested in Buying some coin and hold it till it price goes up?
You can invest in many other things if you are interested I will list some of them. I have seen Bitconnect coin has made a really good progress and their lending section is doing a great progress and they are paying on daily basis you should check that out too. I am not forcing you to invest in it, I am just earning a good profit from it so that Is why I mentioned. I have invested 100$ and almost earned 20$ in 25 days or so.

I think Bittrex has more coins listed compared to Poloniex but in terms of volume Poloniex beats Bittrex buts its still up to you where to trade but before you dive into trading know the do's and don'ts first and try to observe for at least a few days and focus on a coin. Try to see how trend. If you know the thread of Gunthars Gunbot try to read teh first page as it tells you what to look for when trading using Poloniex.

I have my own choices right now and I am holding lots of coins in polo, some of them are ;
XRP (ripple)
ETH (ethereum)
ETC (ethereum classic)
XEM

I also have some coins in bittrex ;
LUN (Lunyr)
GBYTE (Byteball)

I suggest you to deposit only $1000 in polo and another half in bittrex and invest in multiple coins after doing your own research.

Bittrex will be much better choice! no one knows which altcoin will make you money. you can do some research on altcoins(use coinmarketcap) and choose the good ones or use (https://cryptoping.tech) follow their signals.

I would suggest you to capitalize on Ether. Its price is about $200 and will very likely reach the mark of $1000 some day. It doesn’t mean that Bitcoin price won’t grow. It’s just that Ethereum is growing faster than Bitcoin now.

Like someone have said, since you are a beginner, the first thing is to learn and not rush. Take your time to understand how the market works by reading threads and contributions from those that are masters in the game and with that you will be in charge of your decision rather than someone making them for you because the outcome whether good or bad will be borne by you and no one else.

First I would exchange the money to Bitcoin. Then I would split investments up. The preposters have already given good tips, which I would pick up. Poloniex and Bittfinex, for example, are good to invest in familiar cryptos. Bittrex, Cryptopia, Livecoin and Yobit are interesting exchangers of new coins. Also lending can be lucrative for example on bittrex and poloniex. ICO could also bring good results, but you need to get familiar first to invest in ICO. There are many scammy projects but also successful ones with great teams, companies and developments behind them like medical care, solar parks or new technologies.
