Does the GUIMiner use the GPU or CPU

I read this article on startbitcoin.com on how to mine. I have als read on the forms that mining via the CPU is essentially useless and that GPU is "the wave of the future." Does the GUIMiner mentioned in the article use GPU or CPU? Thanks.
