'Buy Bitcoin' Sign Raised as Fed Chair Janet Yellen Testifies Before Congress

Yellen appeared before the House Financial Services Committee to give remarks on the state of the US economy and field questions from committee members. As chief of the US central bank, Yellen also spoke about a recent semi-annual report delivered to Congress by the Fed.

And while Yellen made headlines by expressing her willingness to raise interest rates amidst a healthier economic climate (following years of near-zero rates instituted in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis), it was one attendee who drew notice on social media after he held up a "buy bitcoin" sign two rows behind where Yellen was seated.

A screen grab of the moment was tweeted by CNBC staffer Steve Kopack, and later shared by others who have been watching Yellen's testimony before Congress.

The identity of the person who held up the sign isn't immediately clear.

Yet in a follow-up tweet, Wall Street Journal national economics correspondent Nick Timiraos reported that the individual, along with another, had left the room "after a staffer made some instruction to them." Video published by Bloomberg shows the two individuals being spoken to by a staffer.

Yellen – who told Congress in 2014 that the Fed "doesn't have authority to supervise or regulate bitcoin in any way" – remarked earlier this year that she believes blockchain is an "important technology".

'Bitcoin Sign Guy' Nets Almost $15,000 After Fed Chair Appearance Goes Viral

Blockchain data reveals that it pays to be the Bitcoin Sign Guy.

The bitcoin community was abuzz yesterday when, during an appearance before a Congressional committee by Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen, an attendee held aloft a "buy bitcoin" sign. The image of the sign quickly went viral, though the attendee and his friend were ultimately asked to leave by a staffer.

Soon after his appearance, it emerged that the individual is a friend of a cryptocurrency trader who tweets under the handle CryptoEthan. He posted a picture of the person – soon known as the "Bitcoin Sign Guy" – who, in addition to holding up the now-infamous sign, shared a bitcoin address as well.

As of press time, that address has garnered 6.32570673 BTC, an amount worth just under $15,000 at current prices. While most of the transactions involved, numbering 556 according to Blockchain.info, were small in scale, one notable contribution was for 1 BTC.

It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

I think if he copied a QR code he would have got a hell of a lot more bitcoin sent to him, it is such a pain having to enter a bitcoin address manually and it is open to mistakes.  I would imagine we will see a lot more antics like this now from various people in the hopes of getting donations.

Well he did and actually netted 6.32570673 BTC, almost $15,000 for standing out for Bitcoin.

It goes to point out how far reaching Bitcoin have already traversed. Quite interesting to know Yellen admitted they do not have authority to supervise or regulate Bitcoin and already remarked early this year, her belief that blockchain is an important technology.

And in the meantime, bitcoin's price plummeted and whole cryptocurrency market is glowing red. I don't see any impact of potential problems of fiat economy on bitcoin price at all.
In case we will have more negative news come out and the price starts to fall as a result - it will the biggest downward trend we had since bitfinex fail.

Not sure how or why this was posted given that it happened a few days ago already, but this is hilarious and good for that guy for making $15,000. Cheesy

Actually, I am surprised that he has not made more. I would have guessed that he got a lot more than just $15k.
