Hi everyone:

I'm curious. I have this desktop PC with an older AMD Radeon HD 6770 graphics card with 1GB of video memory that I would like to use to mine some crypto coins. I tried to mine Sia coin but now I'm curious if you know of any other coins that I can try mining with it?

Or, maybe a CPU mining. It has Intel Core i7 CPU with 4 physical cores running @ 2.8 GHz and also 16 GB of RAM.

Thanks in advance.

The lowest-end card I mine with is an MSI 7770 ghz edition, and if that were the only card I owned, I would definitely reconsider mining. (Since the motherboard/cpu/ram/hdd added to one low-end card might not be worth it with my rates for electricity.)

I would take a look at Zcash. That's what I'm mining with my 7700 & 7800 series cards. My 1 GB 7770 gets hashrates around 80 h/s.

Nicehash has a convenient benchmarking utility that will work with both your GPU and CPU. I would not expect much from CPU mining, however. Mining with Nicehash yields payouts in BTC, but pay attention to fees and minimum payout thresholds.

You could definitely do a little CPU and GPU mining as an educational experience with your hardware, just don't expect to make very much profit after the cost of electricity. Way back in the days of the HD 5770 (your GPU is essentially a re-release of that one) I mined a fair bit of Bitcoin with a few HD 5770 and 5850 rigs. Of course that was 6+ years ago now....

Still it works though dont expect too much because you cant earn big enough. I dont know what is the hash rate of it but still you can earn but it is not profitable because in your electric bill is greater than your earnings in bitcoin. It is not profitable though

I'm mostly curious about any new coins that just came out. Pretty much like BTC in 2011.

for mining bitcoin, I don't think so but for mining other coins, I think yes you can. with that vga cards, I think you have many option to mining especially with the coins which have low difficulty. for easy step that you can do is you can try to visit nicehash and download the software and then you can try mining with your vga or the other ways, you can visit minergate and download the software and then click start the software.

It's entirely possible to mine Bitcoin with a GPU - it's just not possible to mine ENOUGH to pay the electric usage, much less the cost of the card.

Well, with amd hd 6870 1GB, I had, I was able to mine only Pascal, I think. Using Nicehash software. It was getting me "few cents".

Any i7 should be able to mine Monero for some profit (though the older ones will be LOW profit).
As I recall the Wolf CPU miner is the way to go there.

I'm not sure how well any of the current ZCash miners work with pre-GCN cards if at all - Claymore 9.7 in some testing I did at one point was able to work with one of my A10-5700 iGPU (VERY slow but more due the very slow ram than anything else I think, my A10-7890k wasn't a lot better) so that version SHOULD work with a 6870 since they're both Terrascale of the SAME generation.

Monero - might work but not going to work well on that old and inefficient of a GPU.

It might be viable "mining" GridCoin via the MooWrapper project on BOINC, that card SHOULD work fairly well on RC5-72 work as it's halfway between the 7850 and 7870 on core count and very similar clock rates, and the RC5-72 client used by the MooWrapper project gets along VERY well with terrascale AMD GPUs (my A10-5700 iGPUs pull well over 400 Mkeys/sec with 384 cores at 750ish Mhz, which is in line with my HD 7750 GPUs and A10-7890K iGPUs pulling 600ish MKeys/sec on 512 cores at 800 Mhz).

Not sure if it would cover electric if your electric rate is high, but you're going to run into that no matter WHAT you try to mine on it.

If only I had of known that I could of used my old 5770 6 years ago. Was trying it with zcash today but had no joy getting it to work.

Ethereum has DAG issue, try XMR or ZEC.

I think even if you can mine with other alt coin by using your 1GB GPU, but the main issue is your card performance, you wouldn't get much.

try nicehash benchmark, I'm not recommend to use it for mining, but just to test your card at several algos. So you will see can you card mine something or not. Smiley

ETH and it's spinoffs like ETC are the ONLY Cryptocoins that have issues with "not enough RAM" on a 1GB card, due to how their algorithm is set up.

The real issue is that a lot of mining software doesn't support pre-GCN cards well if at all on coins that ARE currently viable to GPU mine, and the cards themselves eat more power for their compute ability compared to anything GCN and a LOT more compared to any current cards.
