How many of you are completely moving your entire contents of btc off of coinbase prior to the 7/30 date like their support email specified to do if you didn't want your coins tied up there for a short period of time?

We don't know an ETA of how long funds should be tied up there right?  I don't store that much there, but I'm wondering if I should go through the motions of sending them to cold storage if it's just my loose spending money there.

I definitely won't be leaving multiple coins there but what are your guys thoughts on 1.5 btc or less?

According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

you shouldn't be using a web wallet to keep bitcoin anyways and should have moved your coins to cold storage a long time ago.
unless you are using coinbase as your exchange and need to have coins and fiat there to go in and out of orders to trade and make profit. that is a different way and a different level of risk taking, and there is nothing you can do about it and it has nothing to do with Aug 1.

In January 2017 I had go out Coinbase because when Bitcoin market have problem as the price increasing very fast or flash crash, Coinbase will hold my Bitcoin and I can't sell Bitcoin in that time. So, I move my Bitcoin to Electrum and using until today. Electrum very useful and better than Coinbase about security and keep safe my Bitcoin. Not only have option keep private key, it still support use 2FA Cool

I do use several cold storage wallets for all my substantial balances.  Coinbase I just use to purchase things like trezors, nanos, web services, etc.

I also sometimes use it as an inbound address if I'm selling sneakers or something like that. It's probably like 2% or less of my BTC there.

I used to buy as low as I could and sell as high as I could in the beginning, but all the fees they implemented made it tough to be profitable as you can't really use it as an exchange.

Everyone should be doing it to be completely honest. August 1st might come and pass and nothing happens, but in the odd event that something DOES happen, you'd better be safe and have your coins in your own wallet, not in an exchange. That means you'll get to keep your coins no matter what and also have the forked version of it, and if it ends up being worth something, good for you.

I've read too much posts on people having problems with Coinbase. I wouldn't risk it to be honest. Also, I really don't like storing bitcoins on wallets whereas I don't have access to the private keys. It's a bad idea in the first place. It sort of beats the attribute of bitcoin being decentralized.

I only use them, when I want to convert some bitcoins into fiat and to trade when the price takes a dive. I always move my coins out, if I am not trading. Just look at what happened with BTC-e now and previously to MtGox. The exchanges are simply not safe to store coins.

If I were you I would move everything to cold storage, where you have 100% control over the private key. This enables you to make the call, if it comes down to it.

I don't usually put my coins in web wallet unless I have frequent transactions because I find that web wallets are easy to use but still there is a risk associated with it as compared to that of offline wallets. We have already experienced these things multiple times since 2013 and thus I don't keep more than what I need on the web wallet. However, I haven't used Coinbase yet as I had no issues with my current web wallet service provider since 2014.

I just went to send some out of there and there is a pop up message saying there are "transaction delays" because of a backlog of btc and ETH withdrawals. I guess we are going to find out pretty quick if coinbase has been up to some fractional banking like all the big banks. Coinbase has essentially become the Wells Fargo or Chase of Bitcoin.

I don't know how long the delays are and I'm going out of town tomorrow morning so I guess I'm just going to leave my small amount of BTC in that wallet.

Anyone know how long these delays are per transaction? Are we talking hours or days?

I'm sorry I've read the writings about people who have problems with Coinbase. I just move half of it alone is more enough for me.

still saving bitcoins on web wallet is not recommended for that time upcoming.
moving all to cold storage should doing long time ago, but there still nothing too late for go it.
as looking for traffic today at https://blockchain.info/unconfirmed-transactions , it seems needed for 5-6 confirmations will not take for long time, maybe some hours.

I sent 1 btc out of there early this morning since I will be out of town when the 30th comes around. Sent at 5:24AM, and now 3 hours later it is still sitting in pending. It hasn't even gone onto the blockchain for any confirmations yet so it's definitely super laggy right now. A ton of people must be pulling their funds.

It will probably take even longer as the 30th approaches so if you're moving coins off of there I'd recommend doing it ASAP.

I'm moving my bitcoin from all exchanges not just Coinbase.

Also thinking cashing out altcoins also, as I believe they're going to crash hard because everyone is going to do the same thing to get free BCC coins...

I started to move my Bitcoin from Coinbase since a few weeks ago. Not for the same reason but because I got tired of seeing their website offline each time the Bitcoin value is dancing like a queen up and down. With the August 1 date, it just gives me another reason to move from there. We are already July 27, so speed up the process to move your coin, don't wait too much

I would buy a hardware wallet for all major coins where possible or run your own client.

Therefore, I would definately recommend you to move your coins from coinbase now and keep them off unless you want to trade.

Very sound advice, but people still need to trade coins to retain it's value and also to steer it's direction IF there is a coin split.

I would say most of these exchanges will follow the majority decision and that can only be determined IF people still trade on

these exchanges. This is just me, but I will move at least 80% of the coins I usually trade with onto cold storage, where I

have FULL control over the private keys and then keep 20% of my coins on my favourite exchange, to help to steer the

direction that this experiment should take.  Huh

As long as it never happens to them, people don't want to learn. When it happens to them you see them yelling scam, etc.
It's fine to use a web wallet for your daily transactions or quick and easy access, but storing everything on it, is a big NO

Regarding the hard fork on August 1st people become so crazy. Coming a question, Is it safe to leave Bitcoins in Coinbase though Coinbase announced support for it. At the moment, Is Coinbase will remain safe? NO, I can't feel confident that all of my funds will remain safe such of exchange wallet nor Coinbase.

I have withdrawn all of my bitcoin from every trading platform and actually I am not using coinbase right now so I don't have anything there to withdraw out. I have kept my altcoins in their respected wallet except few which are not easy to store out of the exchange platforms.

Many exchange platform might go down during segwit and hardfork; I am expecting poloniex and coinbase to go completely down on first few days of august so withdrawing out any of the alts along with bitcoin you have in them and in other platforms will be wise decision.

I think that we need to move our btc to our hard wallets and to other wallets that we have the 2fa or the two factor authentication. From there we can assure that we have our btc after the segwit. IT IS SAFE.

I think most of the users would move their bitcoin out from coinbase wallet, as the news of a User Activated Hard fork (UAHF) to happen on 1st august is spreading fast, I believe many crypto-currency exchanges are also facing a huge volume of users moving bitcoins out from their sites too.

keeping your bitcoins particularly a large amount of it in any wallet where you don't have any control over your private keys is plainly a stupid move. worst is if its on coinbase

which got a crappy reputation because of their crappy service. if you got any bitcoin over those kinds of wallets, better put it off in a safe place. no one knows what will happen in

the coming weeks so better prioritize your coins safety first. guides about that are all over the internet. you just have to type the magic words and hit enter.

I think most of the users would move their bitcoin out from coinbase wallet, as the news of a User Activated Hard fork (UAHF) to happen on 1st august is spreading fast, I believe many crypto-currency exchanges are also facing a huge volume of users moving bitcoins out from their sites too.
yes, surely it would be huge volume which user who want to moving out their btc from coinbase , so doing asap its should better.

it is recomended by coinbase here
https://support.coinbase.com/customer/portal/articles/2844217-uahf-uasf-faq
'you should withdraw your BTC from Coinbase to an external wallet address under your control by July 31.'
'there is no risk to your existing funds. Leaving BTC in your Coinbase wallet will not change anything about your BTC. However, you should move your BTC off Coinbase if you would like access to coins on the new UAHF chain.'

However the possibility of what will happen, best option choice that we moving bitcoins from exchanges for a while .

It will probably take even longer as the 30th approaches so if you're moving coins off of there I'd recommend doing it ASAP.

I've already moved mine out - that's very good advice.

It's pretty stupid to keep Bitcoin on an exchange right now, especially with all the hacks and goings-on as of late. although most exchanges have given forewarning about how they will handle the fork, if there is some maintenance issue your coins could be locked on the platform and you might miss out on the forks. Everyone has horrible support, so it is something to avoid at all costs if you can.

with as much money as exchanges make I don't want to give them my free BitcoinABC and BitcoinCash.

besides, your coins aren't truly safe unless they are under your control Smiley

I'm not moving all my btc from Coinbase. I will continue to keep part of my bitcoins here. I know it's not safest place to keep bitcoins, but, let it be. Coinbase announced that they will not support Bitcoin Cash and all bitcoin stored here will remain as BTC. I'm not planning to move to BCC chain, so I will left these coins on Coinbase. Offcourse, I'm not using them as my main wallet. Biggest part of my btc is stored in offline wallet and safely waiting for 1st of August.

Now the balance in the coinbase I've empty, I'm worried about the issue of hard fork to make bitcoin lost and can not be claimed, more secure because I was exchange with fiat.

Done a long time ago when they closed my account,  lol.  I actually miss coinbase and circle, because it was the easiest way(s) to buy bitcoin.  Ah, well.  Whether you move them or not, just know that they're one of a very few reliable companies out there where you can buy bitcoin for fiat.  I hear a lot of bitching about them, but they have masters to serve and they have to comply with KYC regs--but they are a solid company.

Bottom line do not store your bitcoin on the redeem site, even bitcointalk administrators have announced things to be prepared on August 1st. I hope you can address that, if you have not read yet you can read it in this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2017191.0

lol did you understand nothing ?  you don't need to move from chain  you automatically on both
you aware if you keep current btc on coinbase you lose money ?

lets say you have 10 btc on coinbase  at 2600$

after split the btc gonna probably drop in price  lets say  maybe 10 @ 2000$

and bticoin cash gonna have some value let say  700$ (you also have 10 of it)

and so you lose 10 bitcoin cash  value of 700$ each

if you had withdraw your bitcoin from coinbase you have still 10 btc  @ 2000$   and also 10 bitcoin cash what you can sell if you wanna change it to btc

we are free to still use coinbase to save our coins in their site but for me, i think i will not save the coins with them again and i am glad that i do it for a long time ago so for now, there is no coins in my account. its better to save our coins into other place that give best support so we don't have to worried if some bad thing is happen.

I agree, we don't have control on those kind of wallet, much better if we move it on hard wallets.. I'm not using coinbase anyway
thank goodness I don't have big amount of bitcoin on my wallet and I don't have the problem on moving my balance anywhere
but it will be good if I experience things so I can learn

I am pending with long list like coinbase, xapo, poloinex, liqui, c-cex and yobit. Probably will move off to my electrum by this weekend. My inner thoughts still sit in lazy side and misguiding me there will be no mandatory requirement for moving into privatekey accessible wallets as there will be no risk of chain split. But I am sure preparing to be safer must be good as of now as per theymos' suggestions. Because anything could happen even in 11th hour like some naughty miner may go against softforks too. Being prepared well in advance will not hurt Wink
