I stumbled over the Abe software and was wondering what the software is exactly doing.

Is my assumption right, that the software is transforming the downloaded blockchain of the official Bitcoin client into a relational database in order to access the blockchain data more easily?

I think, this software is just like Blockchain.info and Blocktrail.

edit: wait, it says that the inspiration is from Bitcoin Block Explorer. Is this a different thing?

Yes.

Quote from: github.com/bitcoin-abe/bitcoin-abe
This software reads the Bitcoin block file, transforms and loads the data into a database, and presents a web interface similar to Bitcoin Block Explorer, http://blockexplorer.com/.

If you want to try out abe, be carefull...

The software is real easy to install, but for me, it took several weeks to parse the whole blockchain.
So, the setup (OS, bitcoin daemon, downloading the blockchain, installing abe, loading the blockchain into abe) took almost a month...

The second time, i did find a database dump from 2014-2015 (don't remember). This shortened the loading time by a couple of days.

Right, but your mileage will obviously vary.  How long it takes will depend on your hardware, your connection speeds, etc.  And there's the tip about starting with a db dump...
