My suggestion is join a activity that you take enjoyment in and while participating in the activity speak to some of the people that are partaking in it with you. Tell stories ask questions making friends is as simple as making yourself available to be a friend if you are closed down and seem like a loner people will treat you as such.

I see it as three types of friends.  There are online friends, friends that just want something from you, and your real go to jail friends.  

Online friends are easy to make.  Just signup for a site of your interest and follow and converse with those individuals.  I consider these low cost friends, you don't have to see them, and you don't have to help them move.

Friends that want something from you are just that.  They will take but never give back.  If you are a giving person and don't mind getting nothing in return these individuals do sometimes become real friends, not likely, but it does happen.

Then there are the real friends.  These are the ones you help move, they help you move and you can count on them in the good times and the bad.  They have your back and you have theirs.
