After a long break from real systems development (only research and prototypes), I'm going back with a complete new design for a cryptocurrency / blockchain system. Basic ideas: - Lightweight non-mining full-node. Basic ideas and efficient authenticated dynamic dictionary implementation details are given in the paper https://eprint.iacr.org/2016/994.pdf, I also highly recommend this presentation by Prof. Reyzin from RWC'17 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHY7JnLrK5o- For the mining nodes, it will be supposed that they are mostly running in the regime similar to Warp-mode in Parity, fast-mode in Geth, but stronger security guarantees, see this draft (more formal paper is on the way): https://arxiv.org/abs/1603.07926- Instead of SPV, much more efficient light client regime, tens of kilobytes instead of tens/hundreds of megabytes to bootstrap! So really light mobile clients: Based on the work of Kiayias et al. http://fc16.ifca.ai/bitcoin/papers/KLS16.pdf- New economic model, "space-scarce economy" https://eprint.iacr.org/2017/644- New transactional language, superior to Bitcoin Script, for now only 1-page description is done and a prototype interpreter: https://github.com/ScorexFoundation/sigmastate-interpreterIt will be Proof-of-Work system, with some memory-hard Proof-of-Work to resist ASICs. website is: https://ergoplatform.org/development could be tracked on github: https://github.com/ergoplatform/ergo. The earliest testnet will be around in September, hopefully. We made some free giveaway to Waves community, token is EFYT (Ergo First Year Token). In the next chapters I will share details on the transactional language, as well as plans on governance, funding etc. Please join the effort!

Initial post maybe not very clear from in regards of what can be achieved. Main properties of the Ergo are following:
- Simplicity: only hash function and sigma-protocols to be used, no super-fancy cryptography. PoW consensus. All the proposals chosen are more or less clear in what they are doing.
- Blockchain safety: guaranteed upper bound on script verification time, no UTXO spam is possible(in long term), light full nodes (with full-node security guarantees), so we can have bigger output size with no much fear (blockchain as a database becomes real. database would be still costly and pretty limited for sure).
- Efficiency and scalability: we can do more without losing in security.
- Flexibility: not self-amendable blockchain, like Tezos, but miners will be able to change many parameters (slowly) dynamically (via voting).
- Soft-forkability: it will be possible to enrich the language and add some things to the block structure via soft-forks only
- Protocol friendliness: transactional language is more reach. There are already examples of crowdfunding via 1-line output (backer) script, demurrage coin, ring signature etc.
So Ergo will be not about fancy features, Blockchain 2.0 / 3.0 / 4.0, but Bitcoin replacement with solid tech (I hope).
Now on social/financial side of things:
development, maintenance and marketing are not free, moreover, not cheap. The plan is to charge miners, like in ZCash. The tax would be lower, 10%, and money are to be given to foundation. During the first year foundation is to be controlled by initial team. The team has right to sell these tokens or obligations for them. 50% of coins will be issued in the first year, means the initial team can sell in some way 5% of total supply. EFYT tokens issued on Waves are about these 5%.
Some minor part is given away for free, something will be sold to private investors. About ICO, I'm not sure, there are some positive as well as negative things about it.
After first year we hope it will be possible to change the team (including firing founders) via community voting organized by the foundation. This is one particular reason why we also want to put some money into developing cryptographic voting technologies along with some universities (more to be announced in coming months, hopefully).
We are also thinking on launching two blockchains, one for money, another to be public bulletin board for protocols (voting, auctions etc) and data records (DNS etc), with atomic cross-chain swapping and maybe sidechaining. EFYT tokens will be changed for tokens in both systems.

Testnet0 will be on Equihash Proof-or-Work function. Implementation of this PoW is just merged.
Can't say delivery date of Testnet0. Even very initial version of Ergo will be very ambitious:
- light-SPV mode with utterly compact chain bootstrapping data - lightweight fullnodes with very limited storage consumption - additional hybrid mode of operations - memory-hard Equihash PoW
We made a lot of improvements, tests and benchmarks in our own underlying libraries. We are writing a lot tests for Ergo as well (93 tests atm). I think quality should be the highest priority.
We need to start to work on documentation and parametrization of light-spv mechanism and Equihash.
We are ready to show some demos, so we're looking for some guys capable to deliver stunning video effects.
=====================================================
Recently foundation account sold EFYT tokens for 0.6 BTC via DEX to pay a dev. Maybe we will continue to do that (selling less than 1 BTC / month) in coming weeks.
On marketing / volunteers, we're focusing on technical things now (and overbusy even with them). We do need for some community manager.

Announcement from Q&A, questions and answers will be published soon
kushti
Hi guys! 12:01
We have basic components tested in isolation. Now we are going to combine them into a working p2p network node implementation. There will be multiple modes of operation possible for a node (Bitcoin-like full node, fullnodes like fast mode in geth Ethereum client, light full nodes, utlra-light SPV nodes etc), so everyone will be able to run a client with desirable tradeoff in security assumptions / altruism / resources consumption. Hard to say precise day, but we think about few weeks.
The testnet will be called testnet0. After initial release we will be split. Catena, Tolsi and some new guys will work on monitoring / improving networking, resources consumption, better mining software and other issues with the client.
I will switch to finish Sigma-State language which is conceptually done mostly, but a lot of details still to be handled carefully. I hope a paper on the language will be released before mid-Nov. Testnet1 will include Sigma language. ETA is early 2018.
Testnet2 will be about economic parameters, space-scarce economy, soft-forkability (I think it is possible to have minimal number of hard-forks in Ergo, or avoid them at all). If complexity of the system would be still totally undesrtandeable, it could be another testnet, Testnet3, with NG(like Bitcoin-NG)/Aspen support. Or we can go directly to the release, lets' see.
So release will be about second half of 2018. We're planning to do some promos of features we have (lighter SPV, light full nodes etc), in form of blogposts and also short catchy videos. There are four devs at the moment. We will increase tech team slowly, with really technically strong people. We're still talking with lawyers about legal structure etc. Nothing to announce here though.

Ergo Q&A, 21.09.2017
Hi Guys, thanks for hosting this Q&A. Will we be able to mine ERGO with the testnet full node?
In testnet0 we'll have scala implementation of the miner, that is already implemented but very inefficient. A bit later we're going implement support for high-performance GPU miners to test everything in more realistic conditions.
What uses will have ergo in the crypto world ? others then smart contracts.
The idea is to have more decentralized ecosystem by having a wider range of options to run a client. For example, there are no SPV mobile clients for Ethereum, ERGO will have efficient trustless mobile clients.
Have you considered making ergo dedicated miners in the future?
Ergo PoW is based on Equihash, so we will be able to take miners from ZCash. For sure they will require some modification to work with Ergo, so finally, we'll have dedicated miners for Ergo
So still no ICO planned?
Yes, still no ICO planned
Will mining have some kind of dev fee which would be used to fund further development of the project?
Yeah, we still consider such a model, that 10% of new coins will go to the foundation and will be used for further development of the project. In future, we're going to implement treasury system to allow our community to decide, how to use this coins in decentralized way.
After implementation of sigma state language for smart contracts, what would be the main direction as for anon functionality, towards Monero, Zcash or towards some own approach? In what extent do you collaborate with Waves on smart contracts? Ergo smart contracts will be Turing complete or non Turing complete ?
There's already very efficient mixing example in ERGO, discussing it with experts. More things in regards with anonymity will come I guess. Sigma-State will be not "turing complete", its idea is to be just more powerful than Bitcoin Script, and at the same time more friendly to analysis / ddos prevention, and also more friendly for offchain protocols. The bet here is to have the heaviest logic in off chain protocols.
You will do more airdrops to WCT? or the airdrop u did was the first and last one to waves community?
An airdrop should be not predictable, maybe another one will take place, who knows
Will the Aspen protocol be running in the Testnet1?
No, Aspen may be implemented in Testnet3 only (it's described in the announcement above)
Only working on the tech now, or do you guys have any plans yet for marketing and promotion to get mass adoption eventually? I am based in mainland China so interested whether or not you might have any plans yet to promote it in China and Asia?
We're working on tech only until testnet0 implementation, after that we'll start working on the legal structure for Ergo, promotion, etc. Our marketing strategy is still an open question, so I can't answer your question about China and Asia right now
Considering two blockchains being mentioned, one for money, another to be public bulletin board for protocols (voting, auctions etc) and data records (DNS etc), with atomic cross-chain swapping, is it possible that there will be one system where everything is combined through sidechains for example or there will be rather two separate systems cooperating in cross-chain style? I understood that you will have 2 blockchains (currency/smartcontract), do you progress on both simultaneously? will they be released at the same time?
Yes, it will be two mainnet blockchains, separation will be done in testnet2/3. Sidechaining is possible, but a lot of tricky questions to be resolved here. I'm aware of some bleeding-edge research in this area, not public atm.
Is there any plan for Hybrid POS?
No, Ergo will be PoW only
What about PoS chains there will be possible sidechains with waves for example?
Pure sidechaining is tricky for PoS blockchains, but atomic swaps should be possible as soon as both chains will have an ability to pay for hash preimage.
About connection with Waves, Sasha is going to invest some money, no more legal ties.
Will IOHK be the legal entity behind ERGO... or perhaps a new foundation? I guess that's what you're sorting out with your lawyers now.
No any connection with IOHK really, maybe Charles or the company will invest, no more. Maybe we'll be happy to buy some research from IOHK, but the company seems to be fully booked by Cardano atm.
Atomic swaps are preferable in a combination of POW-POS systems or they can be also realized between POW-POW systems?
For atomic swaps, only pay-to-hash-preimage and timelock conditions are enough. ZCash guys recently did show CATS demo, ZCash <-> Bitcoin swap. So swaps will be possible for any of Bitcoin and its descendants, ZCash, Ethereum, Nxt, Ergo, and Waves if Sigma.
Are you looking for other “early investors” or Charles and Sasha will bring enough money?
We're looking for more, especially from people with similar vision.
The goal of light full nodes is that they will be able to do verification on any device?
Yes, and also very fast verification, without losing basically anything in security
Is mining additionally ever possible with light full nodes?
No, we assume that miners should have enough resources to keep full state. However will be able to prune old blocks to prevent blockchain boat.

hi, I can't find information about ERGOFYT. What is the supply and how will it be swapped on mainnet? How was it distributed?
https://ergoplatform.org/qa_2017_05_29.html"What will be the total coin supply? When the platform is ready, there will be 50 million tokens issued during the first year. We'll have 10% of them and we'll convert EFYT to Ergo when we get them. For now I'm thinking about a buy back program in EFYT/Ergo pair, so you'll be able to get Ergo tokens earlier at a lower percent, or later with 1:1 convertation. Anyway, after the first year of Ergo’s life (or earlier) EFYT tokens will be converted to Ergo coins. Only the first year supply is defined at the moment, but we'll have much bigger potential mining income than in Bitcoin."

It is mineable(equihash), there is a possibility there may be ICO , at moment is undecided. EFYT were airdropped & sold on Waves DEX , you can buy there now but there is limited supply. I totally agree this will be big!!

Latest info about supply from Telegram:
Dmitry Meshkov: you may expect first year supply ~10 * (number of used tokens). For now number of used tokens is ~400k, so first year supply ~4M. Now I think that we'll use at most 1M tokens, so at most ~10M first year supply but situation may change to both directions)
nbdyowens: I want to invest and contribute, but after reading all the way back to Nov, still struggling with monetary supply. Will first year supply be 50% of total supply, like original 50M first year / 100M total plan? So if first year supply is 10*(400K to 1M) = 4M to 10M, then total supply would be between 8M and 20M?
Dmitry Meshkov: yeah

ERGO Emission curvehttps://ergoplatform.org/news_emission_curve.htmlAfter multiple internal discussions as well as taking into consideration our community's input, we are pleased to announce Ergo's MainNet emission curve which will be applied upon launch. Emission curve was configured based on these considerations: - Total supply: 100 million tokens (as described in FAQ section). - Token distribution timeline: 8 years (due to Ergo's economy model [see papers in TECH section] it is possible to issue all tokens within this amount of time). - Block interval: 2 minutes (in order to establish a robust and secure network). - Fixed rate during initial 2 years: allowing this time frame so the circulating supply becomes more predictable. - Miners rewards' reduction every 3 months, beginning after initial 2 years: in order to calculate rewards in a more predictable manner. Taking all these concepts into consideration, Ergo's emission curve is as illustrated below:

EFYT to ERGO swap will be taking place during the first year after mainnet launch. It is too early to talk about exchanges especially with scala and new technology. There will be for sure some gateway provided for Waves DEX to redeem EFYT for ERGO in meantime

May I know how much tokens were sold at the ICO?
There was no ICO, EFYT tokens are released per development needs on exchange. Next they will be redeemed for ERGO during first year after mainnet launch Max circulating amount of EFYT will be 1,971,000 before mainnet launch(10% of first year supply, team tax, to be able to redeem them during first year)

I really hope project will be succesful, because I see the coin for a long time, after the coin is well known to general public.
In addition, it is evident that investors are interested in this project. I have already heard a lot of good reviews about this project. and I am glad to announce it.

This sounds like a promising platform, but that is just based on the description on the thread and website. But I hope it's true that this is a good platform, and also I hope that it will could compete with another existing platform.

From now on, I will provide weekly updates, mostly on Fridays.
We're now working very hard towards next testing network, Testnet1. Release is planned around June, 1st. The main feature for this release is our brand new transactional language Sigma-State. We already have many examples in this language: P2SH, MAST, crowdfunding, demurrage currency, oracles etc. Complexity of language expressions can be decided before an execution, complex signature schemes are coming out-of-box! We're working on the language whitepaper, I'm also writing down transaction format specification.
After testnet1 release, we will work on design finalization, namely ASIC resistance, fighting with work outsourcing (pools), finalizing contract details, possible proof-of-storage scheme, system parameters upgrade via miners voting etc. Testnet2 should be similar to mainnet.
On research side, some exciting solution for fully stateless clients is coming!

The project is developing very well and in accordance with the schedule, I very much hope that this project will develop steadily in the future. Pay attention to the community and have a PR campaign for the investment community to know about your project. I will invest in this project if it is really good.

18.05 update:
We're on track, so testnet2 release is planned on June,1st. We're finishing serialization of spending proofs, coins and transactions, and also a specification which will be online within next few days.
Testnet 1 transactional model features: - Schnorr protocol and proof of Diffie-Hellman tuple knowledge protocol as building blocks (proof of Pedersen Commitment knowledge will be added later) - Arbitrarily complex AND and OR conjectures (to build complex multisig schemes). Threshold conjectures will be added later. - SecP384R1 curve - A lot of (typed) predicates over blockchain state. We have many examples (see my prev. message) to test the network! - No implicit rules to produce money out of thin air. No coinbase transactions, no implicit fee (we assume that a fee should be a spendable-by-anyone coin which will be claimed by a miner in a last transaction in a block). All the coins rewarding miners (presumably) will be created before the genesis block (in a genesis UTXO set) and locked up to certain heights. Details in the spec.

25.05.2018: pretty minor update, as we're simply working. In particular, we're finishing merging our new transactional \Sigma-state language. Initial code will be around Monday. There's significant progress with specification as well: you can details on details of coins and transactions constructions. Signature section is mostly ready and will be finished within next few days. Current spec draft: https://github.com/ergoplatform/ergo/blob/def485c3ce9a0565d51dced3d6ddff27765bfcc1/papers/yellow/main.pdf . Currently, the estimated day to launch Testnet1 is still June, 1st.

Ergo Testnet1 release!- This release introduce breaking changes, please remove old blockchain
- Header format changes: nonce removal, extension section hash addition
- Initial release with smart contract language sigma-State
- Coins emission implemented as a sigma-State contract (no implicit coinbase transaction rules, only a genesis megacoin which allows a proper spending via its contract)
- Target delay between blocks is set to 2 minutes
- Difficulty retargeting function changed, changes in difficulty should be smoother
- API changed due to breaking changes. Check openapi.yaml for new API description
Download and run: https://github.com/ergoplatform/ergo/releases/tag/v1.0.0Old network is shut down. No transaction generator and wallet are implemented, they will be added in next minor releases (as well as an address scheme etc). We are also going to describe details of the language and the Ergo in specifications. There are some high-level languages implemented to develop contracts. More details soon. Current primitives used in signatures are curve25519 + 224-bit Blake2b hash, they could be changed in future though.

Sorry for the delay, Friday has been sent in a train. The team spent last days on maintaining and cleaning things after Testnet1 launch. That time I've given a couple of talks @ BCC workshop in Korea (associated w. AsiaCCS, more info are available from this tweet https://twitter.com/ergoplatformorg/status/1003260343659978753 ). The next steps are finalization of Proof-of-Work, voting systems and soft-forkability, tokens and economy. In order to have smooth launches of next testnets, we consider to release them more often. In particular, next testnet, Testnet1.5, is planned to launched on July, 1st. It will contain custom tokens support (and some updates in the smart contracts language).

This week we published a draft of a new paper titled "Self-Reproducing Coins as Universal Turing Machine" https://arxiv.org/abs/1806.10116 . This paper basically shows that Ergo is able to do Turing-complete computations (probably, it is more precise to say that is is able to hold a log of Turing-complete computations). The proof is done by showing how to run one of a simplest Turing-complete systems, Wolfram's Rule110 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_110), over the Ergo blockchain. However, Rule110 is utterly primitive system, one can not do much with it. On other hand, much more complex systems are doable with Ergo. The open question is what is not doable in Ergo under concrete restrictions (such as number of registers in a transaction output, and a limit on a script computational complexity; the latter will be adjustable by miners like gas limit per block in Ethereum though). Let me philosophize a little bit on what Ergo is. Bitcoin is a digital gold system, with some primitive spending conditions to be set on coins. Ethereum is a fully replicated programmable calculator, which is storing a lot of communicating processing sleeping before being awaken by an incoming transaction (with a lot of trivial and non-trivial side-effects, sometimes counter-intuitive or simply dangerous). Ergo is a storage of rich state. You can create a coin (an output) which is requiring a spending transaction to create an output with the same script, or with an amount somehow related to the amount of the coin to be spent. You can have arbitrary data stored in your coin (in form of typed registers). With the state and rules being set in a particular way, you can simulate a Turing machine, or do a crowdfunding or oracles in a simple way (we have examples in the repository which holds our transactional language ( https://github.com/ScorexFoundation/sigmastate-interpreter). Despite the richer functionality, our language is safer that Bitcoin's (computational complexity could be decided before an actual execution, and a block which is too heavy to validate could be rejected early and without much burden). Recently an example of a finite state machine have been shown ( https://github.com/ScorexFoundation/sigmastate-interpreter/blob/34afeb4db149d516adfe98cd24e469699eb56456/src/test/scala/sigmastate/utxo/examples/FsmExampleSpecification.scala). FSMs are important as there were some proposals to use them to describe financial contracts (e.g. https://www.financialresearch.gov/working-papers/files/OFRwp-2015-04_Contract-as-Automaton-The-Computational-Representation-of-Financial-Agreements.pdf ). FSMs in Ergo are like MAST in Bitcoin, but more powerful (cycles in execution are possible). For each step of a contract execution, only current state identifier, and a commitment to FSM description are stored, to perform a step, an user must show correct script and also an outcome state identifier (corresponding to a FSM description, which is basically about tree root hash). We are working on custom tokens, hopefully a testnet with tokens support will be launched next week. After the testnet launch (version 1.5.0 of the reference implementation), we will release 1.5.1 shortly with optimizations in bootstrapping and memory footprint. In July we'll work on networking layer optimizations and efficiency of the client. Also, PoW research will be started

In July we'll work on networking layer optimizations and efficiency of the client. Also, PoW research will be started https://twitter.com/ergoplatformorg/status/1012755729151942657

Testnet 1.5 is going to be launched today. The most important feature in this release is addition of custom assets.
An asset is basically id -> amount pair, where id is unique long (256-bits identifier).
A transaction can create a new assets if its id is equals to the id of the first input coin. Any output can contain then any amount of this new assets.
For assets, preservation law holds: sum of output amounts for each asset not created by the transaction should be no more than sum of input amounts.
Each transaction output may contain up to 4 assets, transaction may operate with up to 16 assets.
In the testnet 1.5 a miner by default creating a new asset each block, with issuance of 1000 tokens.
Currently many things are done in very inefficient way, bootstrapping, networking protocol are far from optimal. We have fixed few things in 1.5.0. And we have added support for improving more in further 1.5.x. releases, such as services announce during handshaking (like Bitcoin is doing) for efficient bootstrapping in multi-mode environment.

We're in the middle of writing wallet and thanks to a transaction generator fixed (after being broken in Testnet1 release), initial tests with big transactions included into blocks done. We found some bugs. In particular, add this line for now: maxPacketSize = 2048576 under scorex { network { We already have a fix a corresponding issue. On Monday we'll release 1.5.1 bugfix release (with some other fixes as well). Around Jul, 20-24, we'll release 1.5.2 release with initial wallet prototype functionality (only API calls and API interface, no other UI). On research side, we're starting PoW research. And our paper "Self-Reproducing Coins as Universal Turing Machine" ( https://arxiv.org/abs/1806.10116) has been accepted to CBT workshop associated with ESORICS'18 http://deic.uab.cat/conferences/cbt/cbt2018/.

This update is short With initial load tests, we found some a couple of performance degradation bugs in 1.5.1. Blockchain processing (for a full node) in 1.5.2 is 30x faster than in 1.5.1 so please use 1.5.2. Next week we'll release a new minor version with initial prototype wallet API.

Summer is hot! - Transaction and block validation rules has been added to the specification (Yellow Paper)
- We consider names for our transactional languages. Low-level language will be called ErgoTree (as it is a typed abstract syntax tree, to be written into the blockchain in a serialized form).
Higher-level language is called ErgoScript, an example in this language:
guard CrowdFunding(timeout: Int, minToRaise: Int, backerPubKey: Sigma, projectPubKey: Sigma) { let c1 = HEIGHT >= timeout && backerPubKey let c2 = allOf(Array( HEIGHT < timeout, projectPubKey, OUTPUTS.exists(fun (out: Box) = { out.value >= minToRaise && out.propositionBytes == projectPubKey.propBytes }) )) c1 || c2 }
- EFYT <-> Ergo transfer details will be announced next Fri hopefully.
- We have a lot of material to be included into the next minor release (1.53): various improvements to the network layer and synchronization (https://github.com/ScorexFoundation/Scorex/pull/280 and https://github.com/ergoplatform/ergo/pull/386), and first stage of the wallet implementation (https://github.com/ergoplatform/ergo/pull/362). Both sets of features are now under review & testing. Probably 1.53 will be out next week with one set of new features or another, or both.

1.53 is ready and will be released this week. It contains significant improvements in bootstrapping and networking layer efficiency.
Initial wallet prototype is ready, code is under review.
Maybe we will rollout new testnets, say, bi-weekly, as it is hard to manage a huge codebase update properly. So, instead of a single enormous Testnet2 release, we'll roll-out few updates (fee model, system reconfiguration, PoW finalization).
On EFYT <-> ERGO exchange:
1. Before the mainnet launch, we'll send EFYTD (EFYT alternative for data chain). 2. Waves <-> Ergo gateway will exist. Thus Ergo token will exist on top of Waves as well. 3. With money got via founders rewards, the Foundation will create orders on Waves exchange, to buy EFYT for ERGO, the price is 1.00

I think it is too early to make any hasty conclusions about the project. But of course, ahead of the project may get more popularity and will be in demand in the market.

https://twitter.com/ergoplatformorg/status/1029766801612255232is there still going to be a 1 + 1 swap, or will it just be EFYT for ERGO?

So apparently what has been written so far, ERGO will be officially released this week and the starting price will be $1 or 1 WAVES on par with it? Blockchain technology is fantastic and always rewarding to find new projects, although some have little ability to put their proposals into practice, I hope it will be different with ERGO!
What has been written is, hopefully, real Bitcoin 2.0 mainnet will launch in Q4, there will be two chains because, with different parameters and built-in sidechains, Ergo is good for data-intensive applications.

if i am reading this correctly, the "swap" will be done by creating an EFYT/ERGO trading pair. basically they are offering 1 ERGO in exchange for 1 EFYT. pretty clever way of going about it, token swaps are sometimes a circus. and the EFYTD will basically be airdropped prior to those orders going up

Next testnet will be named 1.6 and planned to be released in ~10 days.
New features: - threshold signatures (preserving zero-knowledge, thus from k-out-of-n signature it could not be concluded which k signers were real) - initial prototype wallet API implementation (we are going to outsource UI implementation immediately after the release) - a new block section, which will in follow-up releases contain e.g. protocol changes voting information - stricter block validation according to the specification - a lot of small improvements

What about plans switching from CPU to GPU mining? Will this be done before mainnet release or that switch will occur in some point in future time? What about asics and its possible effect on mining algo, already have solution? Anyway guys good luck! I'm ready to support mainnet with some GPU miners

Good. No problem to set miners in different locations and make them work separately to achieve better decentralization and network protection from possible mining power consolidation. But what about luck factor? As number of possible endpoints/nounce's/miners increase and possible maximum setting of GPU's per rig is lets say 13 then at some point in time GPU miners with less GPU-s are probably much less lucky than with higher "hashpower", or there will be something similar to Waves FairPOS and eventually even small miners will get their chance proportionally to get a block let#s say within 50k of blocks (even if only 1) - that approach will definitely help increase decentralization by "small" miners' participation.

Next testnet, 1.6, will be launched within next few days. Every functionality is ready and now under merging.
New features: - threshold signatures, minor updates to transactional language - wallet API - new block section to store auxiliary block data, the extension section - networking layer improvements and various bugfixes
Also, we're considering a PoW scheme now. It seems conceptually it is more or less done. The PoW scheme would be ASIC-resistant (at least, more than ZCash's) and also non-outsourceable (no pools, at least as we know them). We're working on parametrization at the moment.

So 1.6 testnet launched, and we already have code for 1.6.1 (it is needed to review it carefully, and then test and merge it).
From big conceptual parts of the final design not implemented yet:
- PoW: we're in the process of working on the whitepaper and the corresponding code - fee modes: almost finalized, will be in 1.7 - voting system: nothing big and hard, but a lot of work is needed to get details properly done.
On the transactional language, costing remains and some new functions.

A Fri update is coming on Sat, sorry for that! 1.6.1 with few bugfixes will be around on Mon or Tue. Feature set for 1.7 is set https://github.com/ergoplatform/ergo/milestone/5 . The main feature is voting, i.e. system parameters changing via miners voting.

Big claims that you are going to beat $BTC and $ETH. Although the project has some solid fundamentals, I'm not sure if it will get the project as big as BTC. I think it will be on the top 10 though.
When is the estimated release on this one?

When will this hidden gem release its mainnet? Platform market becomes more and more competitive through, what kind of apps do you expect to run on? Is there an exchange for ergo tokens under development?

Q4 2018 Ergo`s efficient blockchain protocol will allow it to be widely used while still remaining friendly to application protocols thanks to its unique transaction language, Sigma-State language based on Zero-Knowledge proofs, safe and practical contracts, light and secure clients, soft-forkability only, conservative and scientific approach. We hope to avoid hard forks after the launch. Flexible smart contracts language, please read our paper on that - https://arxiv.org/pdf/1806.10116.pdf "Self-Reproducing Coins as Universal Turing Machine", will allow to implement any second (third, fourth, etc.) layer protocols as well as sidechains. With different parameters, Ergo is good for data-intensive applications. There will be two chains with the same technology, built-in sidechains support( https://nipopows.com), so it will be possible to release money in Σ-Cash if some event happens in Σ-Data. An example of an atomic Ergo <=> asset exchange https://github.com/ScorexFoundation/sigmastate-interpreter/pull/189/files#diff-64fa5bc99901443c14759fcd2606acc6

The only thing I would like is some kind of promotion of the project in the community. Whether it's a version of signatures and high ranks on the forum or advanced yotubers/insta/githab people who would review the project from the best side.

Providing some news and answering questions:
1.7 is on the way. Instead of voting system (when miners are changing parameters of the system on the fly), it will contain demurrage component. The current design is, no any mandatory minimum fee on consensus level (so market will find a proper function for a transaction fee), but every four years a miner can charge some tokens, thus spending a coin and creating essentially the same coin but with a storage fee. The fee is calculated as K*(coin size in bytes)*storage time. K is to be changed via miners voting. If a user is moving a coin before expiration time, there is no mandatory storage fee to be paid then (but we assume that a transaction fee would be equal to storage fee for an efficient market).
I think 1.7 will be released at the end of the next week. Then 1.8 with voting system, and 2.0 with PoW. PoW is mostly finalized. Then security audit, wallet API update etc, and then mainnet release. 2.0 will be around beginning-mid of November. Not sure about precise date for mainnet now.
We're talking with some outsourcing companies on developing wallet UI and decentralized exchange.

We're talking with some outsourcing companies on developing wallet UI and decentralized exchange.
Maybe you could reuse waves wallet, DEX and matcher at some point in time? Sasha in his recent public speech mentioned that Matcher could be blockchain agnostic and usage on other chains is basically possible use-case. Also you have strong connections with Waves team. I wonder how/then waves/Ergo miners/forgers could benefit from such usage. Also matcher decentralization is an interesting issue to look into during integration process.

Ergo`s decentralized exchange doesn`t require a matcher https://github.com/ScorexFoundation/sigmastate-interpreter/tree/11004c58f3f86aa51f60aaeb060c3e8da0c6d146/src/test/scala/sigmastate/utxo/examples but different protocols could be built on top of the atomic exchange, transactions creating both boxes could be sent off-chain to a matching service, and be posted on the blockchain along with the exchange transaction. Atomic swaps, between Ergo and Waves, will be possible. Ergo is a completely separate and independent platform.

1.7 is under review and testing. It contains networking code refactoring & storage fee implementation.
Unlike most of cryptocurrencies, a coin can not live forever and for free in Ergo: for each block and each byte of a coin (aka unspent output or a box in Ergo jargon), a coin holder needs to pay according to a price coefficient K (cost of storing of a byte in a current active state per block) after 4 years, if a coin was not moved before this time. After the timeout, a miner can charge the storage fee, but needs to re-create a coin with decreased value(if storage fee charged was no more than coin value, otherwise, the miner can destroy the coin fully). If coin is moved before the deadline, there's no any mandatory payment: we assume that fee market will get how to charge fairly.
PoW code is mostly ready.
The last brick, voting system (miners voting to readjust parameters like block size etc) is to be started in coming days! So I guess we can launch Testnet 2.0 around Nov 1st. Testnet 2.0 will be conceptually close to the mainnet.

1.7 is out, and a minor (non-fork) release 1.7.1 with some fixes and updates in API methods is on the way.
PoW code is half-ready, and we're starting Voting System implementation. The Voting System is about system parameters readjustment via miners voting.
With both, we'll release Testnet 2.0 which will be conceptually close to main network!

We have enough minor fixes and new API methods to release 1.7.1 and it will be released in coming days.
On 2.0 features, PoW is mostly ready and its description is on the way. Voting system is started, but no much progress here yet.
After the "Smart Contracts for the People" article (see above), more posts describing ErgoScript are coming!

1.7.1 is out, please try script compilation feature! We're going to produce tutorials on how to do that (and use our API in general), if you want to help with that, welcome!
Before the next Friday it seems, 2.0 features will be mostly done and put under review and testing. Thus the 2.0 release is planned around 22-25th of November. In addition to voting and Proof-of-Work it will contain a new cost estimation procedure for scripts.

I like this project because the team is very open and welcome to each community to provide an update about the project. This update will give you a good impact and it's increasingly growing in the future. But right now I am looking forward to hearing about the Exchange. whatever it is that is being worked on by the team good luck.

Voting system conceptually done, now it is possible to set desirable target parameters, and then a mining software will automatically propose a vote for increasing or decreasing (gradually) in the beginning of a voting epoch, or vote if a desired change proposed by another miner in the epoch. It is possible to change 2 parameters per voting epoch + also vote for soft-fork (over many voting epochs). A step for some parameters is set, for others 1% of current value. A simple example, if voting epoch is just about 4 blocks. Initial values: And then, at height 348. PoW scheme and code are under review. We're discussing what constitutes Testnet 2.0 as we announced that it will be almost the same as the mainnet. A decision on a next release will be given in coming days.

Both voting system and PoW are under review. PoW scheme has been slightly improved (simplified).
We are also willing to deliver new script cost estimating procedure and finalized curve points serialization in 2.0. Thus a next release will be 1.8 with voting system, or Pow, or both, whatever comes first. I think the next week a release will come.
2.0 will be about minor changes then, and ready to start client-side libraries and wallet developments.
We are also starting to describe what is really done in Ergo (a brief teaser).

Interesting, imo you need more than a brief teaser to describe Ergo

Interesting, imo you need more than a brief teaser to describe Ergo [/quote] You are very right! We have a new PoW scheme (first non-outsourceable ever?), a very new approach to contracts, system parameters readjusting, and a new kind of economy! Purely technical improvements lead to a lot of conceptual, even more, philosophical breakthroughs. A lot of efforts are needed to deliver the technicalities and the vision.

Voting system is under review https://github.com/ergoplatform/ergo/pull/540. This is about testnet 1.9.0 and the last big change before testnet 2.0 (which will be different from 1.9 in transactional language interpreter update, which is already mostly done, and also review of cryptographic primitives used). We also have changes for 1.8.1, will be out in next few days.

1.9.0 is ready, but we postponed the release to avoid stressful holidays. Also, there is some good rework in progress towards block extension section. A block in Ergo is consisting of few parts: header, transactions, proofs of state transformations (for non-mining fullnode willing to avoid storing the state), and also extension with additional data. It will contain current system parameters (in the first block of an epoch), interlink vector(for PoPoW), and from now, via softfork it will be possible to add more standardized data there, with non-updated node skipping validation.
So 1.9.0 will be released right after New Year.
A next step is to finalize elliptic curve being used, after that 2.0.0 will be released immediately. No much coding work here, only research.
UTXO snapshot downloading (alternative to "warp" or "fast" mode in Parity/Geth clients of Ethereum) is also done and will be released as 1.9.1 of 2.0.1.
And now we would like to get in touch with GPU mining software developers! Please spread the word about that!

I think to start uncovering Ergo details here.
It will be ~100 million Ergs, and emission will be done in just 10 years. Each Erg is consisting of 1 billion smallest units called nanoErgs.
What will replace emission? How miners will survive? Here we solve few problems with one shot. Namely, we use demurrage to stabilize miners income, and also to have dust cleaning procedure, reduce blockchain bloat, and return lost coins into circulation.
How demurrage is implemented? If a coin is not being touched for 4 years, anyone (presumably, a miner) may spend the coin, but it is needed to recreate the coin with all the fields to be the same but monetary value which is to be reduced by "storageFee" max. Storage fee is defined by coin size in bytes, and pricing factor (cost to store 1 byte for 4 years). The pricing factor default value is 1,250,000 nanoErgs/byte, and the factor could be readjusted via miners voting withing the range (0; 2,500,000), thus miners can potentially switch off demurrage by setting the coefficient to 0.
Also, to avoid creation of coins not profitable to spend, there is another parameter in the system, minimum value per byte of a coin. Default value for this parameter is 360 nanoErgs/byte, and possible range is (0, 10000).
Some simulations for default values:
Storage fee factor: 1250000 Output size: 107 B Simple tx size: 350 B Block size: 512000 B Storage fee for ordinary output: 0.13375 Erg Min dust value of standard-size box: 38520 nanoErgs ===================== Assume that Ergo state has the same number of outputs (60000000), as in Bitcoin. Reward per block: 7.63 Erg + tx fees
(please note block size adjustable by miners as well)

Thanks for the tutorial. I wanted to ask for this, but you were faster!
Do you have any plans for the going live? Any date?
Thanks! Let me answer you along with providing some update. 2.0 will include almost all the features previously planned as 2.x. Thus this testnet release will be pretty much like the mainnet. The biggest question to solve after 2.0 testnet is about soft-forkability, i.e. decide rules how the protocol can evolve in the mainnet with no hardforks (so with miners consent and old nodes continuing to operate on the old chain after a fork). Other issues are audit to be done, specification finalization etc. Thus the biggest problems we are going to have in order to launch are not just about the reference implementation but the infrastructure: - Some guys are doing reference GPU miner, however, we would like to organizer GPU miners contest as well, as ZCash guys did.
- Wallet development. We are going to switch to secp256k1 (Bitcoin's) from current choice of 25519 (Nxt / Waves Monero) we're using now. We have some Wallet API in the reference client implementation, some UI is needed.
- Foundation formation, exchanges etc
- EFYT <-> Ergo swapping rules
So the precise dates are going to be defined not just on tech, unfortunately or not. Come to us to help Ergo to grow!

We have some more example contracts: - Rock-Paper-Scissor game contract, which is widely covered in Ethereum tutorials
- Non-interactive tumbler: Alice creates a coin on the chain and then just listens to incoming transactions. Bob comes and do mixing, in the way that new coins created by mixing transactions
are indistinguishable to external observer, one coin could be spent only by Alice, another only by Bob, and this is ensured by the Alice's coin contract!
Code and unfinished documentation are online: https://github.com/ScorexFoundation/sigmastate-interpreter/pull/380

More quick facts on Ergo: Ergo has Bitcoin-like UTXO transactional model. Namely, a transaction is spending one-time objects and creating new one-time objects. We call this object a box. A box is immutable object which could be only created or removed. A box is not simply a coin, rather, it is contains registers with data (and code). Even more, there's nothing in box but registers. There are four predefined registers, with monetary value, protecting script, and identifier of a transaction which created the box and output index in the transaction (and also creation height). Because data of transaction which created the box is included into it, the box has unique contents and thus unique id. A box is first-class citizen in the Ergo protocol. Active boxes set is authenticated via a hash-based data structure, which allows to build lightweight full-nodes (as described in https://eprint.iacr.org/2016/994). A box may have up to six additional registers with typed data. A script may access its registers (as welll as registers of input and output boxes of the spending transaction). This design with immutable boxes is more friendly to light clients than a cryptocurrency with long-living accounts (such as Nxt and Ethereum), see e.g. https://eprint.iacr.org/2018/968 , and also simpler in regards with some security problems.

Testnet 2.0 release date is planned to be around March, 14th.
This [PRE-ANN] topic will be abandoned after that, and a new [ANN] topic will be started.
2.0 conceptually will be very close to mainnet.
Security audit will be started about the same time.

The plan is still the same: testnet 2 will be released around March, 14th. It will include the following: - Used cryptographic group is replaced with secp256k1 (used in Bitcoin)
- Header is of constant size as interlinks vector (described in KLS16 paper http://fc16.ifca.ai/bitcoin/papers/KLS16.pdf )
- Networking protocol is now versioned (to allow updates in future), also a peer now is signalling its operation (full node, light node storing all the blocks, or number of last blocks stored etc).
- Memory pool reworked
- Language interpreter reworked, many operations added to the language, included operations on authenticated trees (it allows to do ICO/LETS systems and other complex contracts with dynamic data, more examples soon)
- Foundation script and bootstrapping method are finalized
- Tokens per transaction limit has been removed: now every token, input, and output has some cost (adjustable via miners voting), which is added to the total computational cost of the transaction (thus costs a node is bearing to parse and check a transaction are explicitly defined).
No major changes after Testnet2, only finishing some things in the language interpreter, security audit, networking protocol improvements etc. Thus the team already feels the heat of the Ergo starship launch. Also, ErgoScript tutorial will be published within next few days.

Another Q&A session will be held on Tuesday. Time will be announced on Monday, here, and also over our Telegram and Twitter channels.
On latest changes:
1. Unlike Bitcoin and other UTXO-based cryptocurrencies, an Ergo transaction has inputs to spend (and outputs to create), but also read-only inputs not to be spent. This simplifies a lot oracles, token-level contracts, contracts depending on other contracts etc.
2. Operations on trees gives possibility to have data storage authenticated with a coin (or UTXO, or "box" as we call it) with no data itself being stored in the UTXO set. This allows to have persistent authenticated storage, with possible authenticated modifications, with no much burden on full-nodes (unlike Ethereum).
With these new feature, such complex contracts as ICOs, whitelisted token trading, LETS systems etc become possible. Some examples soon.

Today's QA session transcript: First, we have a major announcement - Ergo mainnet launch is planned for May 26 if no security vulnerabilities will be found during audit process! Question: what are the vision about scaling and adoption? (kushti:blush: : About scaling, the main approach is to avoid bloat without compromising functionality. E.g. persistent updateable storage is possible, with updates to be checked by a blockchain contract, but only digest of authenticated data structure (and some additional bytes, less than 40 bytes anyway) are stored in the UTXO set dependless on data set size. Storage rent is helping to remove dust from the UTXO set. Then light clients: in Ergo you can have full-node guarantees without storing UTXO set, if you do not mine. That's about much improved boostrapping and block validation times. With such improvements, it is possible to raise TPS without compromising classic blockchain assumptions and guarantees. Ok, but do you want concrete numbers? I don't have them, as parameters like block size etc are not set in stone, rather, miners can adjust them. So if a miner is experiencing low full block validation time (as hardware is getting better with time, as well as software), he may propose or vote to increase block size. On adoption, we expect following people to come: 1. People valuing social contract among the system and its users. E.g. people dissatisfied with Ethereum forking. Ergo will not have hard-forks to update functionality, while it will be possible for community to upgrade the protocol in many aspects. 2. Because of (1) at least, and also limited supply, Ergo would be good as store-of-value asset (demurrage cost is small if you just store a coin in the system). 3. People who need for safe, simple, and and efficient financial applications. Ergo's Smart Money concept is much simpler that Ethereum's Smart Contracts, while powerful enough for most financial applications of the people not having very specific skills to develop Solidity contracts, or bunch of money to hire proficient devs. 4. Not ready to predict anything about big companies, but some businesses already expressing interest to do some tokens and contracts on top of Ergo. To early to announce anything though. Question: is there an example or usecase? (kushti:) We have many example contracts: oracles, crowdfunding, atomic cross-chains and single-chain (token-to-token) swaps, mixing, etc. Basic things are covered in the ErgoScript tutorial for developers https://docs.ergoplatform.com/ErgoScript.pdf . A document with more complex examples (cold wallets, mixing, Rock-Paper-Scissors game) will be published soon. Further, we'll show examples of ICO scenarios and a LETS system ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_exchange_trading_system). Please also take a look to the targeted microcredit contract example from " http://chepurnoy.org/blog/2018/10/smart-contracts-for-the-people/" blogpost. Question: Do you have intentions to build a native off-chain solution like lightning network? And what is your vision on community-driven Yes, we hope that they will occur at some point. Our goal now is to provide as flexible protocol as possible to make their implementation easy. Suprisely, we already have community members that are working on sidechain implementation on top of Ergo, but this work is in the early stage. We support any activity from our community, including sidechains) Question: what blockchain project is similar to ERGO? In some aspects, Bitcoin (soft-forkability, but we're going much further), Coda (if it's the real thing, I need to check still; light client), Grin (FlyClient is similar to PoPoWs), ZCash (Equihash is similar to our PoW, but our params are stricter and our PoW is pool-resistant). Can not name anything like our language! So, in general, the Ergo is very unique. Question: What is ErgoData and what are its practical use cases? And how long after Mainnet is it going to be implemented? (kushti:) ErgoData was planned to be a blockchain with the same technology under the hood, but different parameters to address needs of data-oriented applications. Now we're totally focused to launch the single chain and applications on top of it. I think ErgoData could come 2 or 3 years after, if there will be demand for such applications, and also based on limitations applications (especially, data-intensive) on top of Ergo may have. Supposedly, it will be a sidechain. Now there's good progress in this area, so supposedly by then we may have unconditionally good sidechains. Question: when can we start mining? and can we mine with cpu ? For sure you can start mining with CPU right now. Just set up a full node (check this guide http://chepurnoy.org/blog/2019/01/how-to-set-up-and-configure-full-ergo-node/ by @Oskin1) with mining = true config settings, and your node will start mining after the initial synchronization. Example config may be found at https://github.com/ergoplatform/ergo/blob/master/src/main/resources/nodeTestnet/application.confQuestion :But we are not on mainnet yet? So we can only mine test coins? Yes, you can only mine test coins now. GPU miner will be definitely available before mainnet (probably this or next week) Question: will there be a manual on how to setup a wallet? Wallet is one more thing that should be updated before mainnet launch, we take advice about it's secure setup and so on. For now you can only set up seed phrase as a plain text in your config file (section 2 in set up post http://chepurnoy.org/blog/2019/01/how-to-set-up-and-configure-full-ergo-node/) Question: Whats the minimum requirements to run a node? It all depends on your node regime) We haven't measured it precisely, we tun our full nodes on droplets with 4 Gb memory, 2 CPU, 80 Gb SSD drive, but it is like recommended config, not a minimum one. Question: are you planning any cooperation with other platforms (Waves for example)? What kind of? We're planning to be listed on Waves DEX (this will significantly simplify EFYT/ERG swap), no other cooperation with platforms is planned. Question: Do you have plans to add an option to generate ERC721 alike tokens? Tokens that can't be splitted You can issue one token per transaction for free, so it is not a problem to issue a huge amount of tokens (with 1 max supply). There is no standard to unite them into a class of similar tokens (no standard way to check, that token aa...aa is of the same class of tokens as token `aa...bb`), but probably such kind of a standard will occur in the future. Question: Is there an option to broadcast a batch of transactions at the same time? Ideally them to be included in same block There is no API method to broadcast batch of transactions at the same time, but nothing stops you from broadcasting them one by one with no delays. So the should not be a problem to broadcast as many transactions as you wish simultaneously.Regarding Ideally them to be included in same block - it is possible to write some kind of a contract, that ensures that some batch of transactions were included in a single block (or where none of them was included), however, we haven't tried it yet. In addition this may require a miner with modifier rules of collecting transactions from mempool. Question: Is there an option to send transaction with 0 value asset? So the token is in the transaction, but it's amount is 0? No, that's not possible Question: Is there an option to send "sponsored" transaction. The transaction which fee is paid by a custom token. It might be done using the exchange example, so you can create a contract, that buys your token for Ergo, and when a sender is going to send a token - he sells required amount of token and makes a transfer of the remaining amount of tokens inside one transaction. Question: so there is no way to transfer 0.0000001 of token? Every output in Ergo should have some amount of Erg in it. Transaction fee may be 0, but you should put some Erg amount to every output created.

1. Foundation will receive money each block, as defined already in the Foundation Rewards contract (provided in specification). 2. Regularly, probably daily, it will transfer Ergs to WavesDex. All the rewards up to EFYT volume spread around will be sent to buy the EFYTs back before all other spendings. 3. Orders are to be created at 1:1 ratio. 4. Ergo-backed Waves token is to be sent to Ergo chain via gateway, hopefully, official Waves gateway (talks are started about that).

Please note that the Ergo Platform is indeed a platform for potentially complex application. In a new article it is described how an ICO could be done on top of Ergo. https://github.com/ergoplatform/ergo/wiki/An-ICO-Example-On-Top-Of-Ergo . Please provide feedback! P.S. Thus we can cover 99% of Ethereum Classic & Ethereum use cases without bold state and other Ethereum* technology problems.

We'll have Ergo <-> Waves gateway since day one, Ergo tokens will have 1:1 exchange rate with EFYT on DEX, the Foundation will create orders daily. On other exchanges which will list us from launch information will be provided later.
Also, whitepaper is coming!
This [PRE-ANN] topic will be replaced with a new of the [ANN] kind in coming days.

I personally think this a kind of breakthrough, talking about Ergo's abilities. It is shown to be possible to have community currency on top of Ergo! With the ICO example published before, it means that the Ergo Platform is indeed the platform!

I've read your teaser PDF, Justin's emission schedule post, and various other posts. I can see that, if the project develops as intended, there could be interesting applications.
I have two questions for you.
First, I am curious how you expect token price to interact with inflation. Considering that inflation will be ~100% for the first couple of years and still quite high for another 5 years after that, demand will need to increase very fast to prevent token depreciation. Do you consider that realistic? Currently, EFYT tokens are selling for more than $1.50, which is high for an unproven project if we consider that the final supply will be nearly 100M. What incentive is there to purchase EFYT now, instead of waiting for the supply to increase and the price to drop as impatient investors wait for adoption? (To be clear, I'm not suggesting that the project won't succeed, but you know how impatient crypto people are.)
Second, is there anywhere where I can learn about the token economics for Ergs in detail? I understand that users can lock Ergs temporarily, but what about fees, etc.?
Thanks and good luck.

Like woolypooly say, ERG is a gem for 4 GB AMD GPU. So I am mining, trading, and holding some as well. I just wish deposit and withdrawals of ERG are now open at BitMart. I hope Ergo devs contact them soon so that we can freely do some trading there.

Ergo Integration with Gravity NetworkErgo’s core developer Alex Chepurnoy (Kushti) explained that: Integration with Gravity is more than an interesting technical challenge, it offers an opportunity to open the Ergo blockchain to a large number of digital assets from the blockchain networks integrated with Gravity, which will create a stable foundation for the development of DeFi on Ergo. more informations https://ergoplatform.org/en/blog/2021-05-17-ergo-%C4%B1ntegration-with-gravity-network/
