NaN.
Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!
Advertised sites are not endorsed by the Bitcoin Forum. They may be unsafe, untrustworthy, or illegal in your jurisdiction.

I'm fairly sure the Mining section is for mining, and I find it a little irritating that if you are mining an alt, it gets moved to Alternate Cryptocurrencies. Yes, there is some overlap, but if your post is mainly about mining, no matter if you're mining SHA-256d, scrypt, or scrypt-jane even, it should go in the Mining section where people knowledgeable about Mining are. Alternate Cryptocurrencies is not the place for these threads.

TL;DR: No.

Long version: Bitcoin Forum > Bitcoin > Mining

But the threads are mainly about mining. That's like moving this thread to the Mining section because I'm talking about mining. I am, but it's a better fit in Meta.

But the forum you are speaking of that you post in are about bitcoin. Long version: Bitcoin Forum > Bitcoin > Mining

Why, though? I understand this is a forum about bitcoin, but mining is mining, regardless of WHAT I'm mining. The process is mostly the same, excepting algorithm. Why be so strict about it?

Because it is off topic.

Well, with this logic I guess if someone posted about mining gold or diamonds at the mining subsection it would be okay to leave it there?  Undecided

I recently took a Cassacuis coin with me while riding the bus. Can I have a subforum dedicated to short-distance public transportation?

That's an obvious strawman. Mining gold or diamonds has nothing to do with Bitcoin, but if I mine PPCoin, it's the EXACT same thing on a different blockchain.

German > Off-topic is not the forum for off-topic English banter, even though Off-topic is so named. Even though it's the EXACT same thing in a different language.

It MAY make more sense, but it doesn't belong in Bitcoin boards. If it was a topic about SHA256 vs Scrypt, then maybe it would be relevant.

So it would be fine to talk about mining PPC, but not LTC, then?
No, no. Going off the description: " Discussion of cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin. Note that discussion of how these currencies *relate to* Bitcoin may fit in other categories. "

A topic purely about LTC or PPC or MNC or whatever mining doesn't belong in Mining. A topic about [alt coin] in comparison to Bitcoin, or merged mining, etc, may fit in other categories.

so you are claiming the experts to mining are only in the bitcoin mining section.. people in the alt coins dont know shit about mining even though their coins tend to use different methods and as such, expert bitcoin miners could be very very wrong about what is best to mine what every fly by night coin you are mining today.

TL;DR

It is retarded to even want this.

It doesn't matter how big your altcoin gets, or even if it surpasses bitcoin, it still is NOT mining bitcoin. If something's big enough, an external forum dedicated should be made for it by those who care about it, and it should not be the responsibility of the bitcoin forum moderators to maintain a subforum for altcoins. There already are other dedicated forums such as https://forum.litecoin.net/ . You may see it otherwise, but those of us who are here primarily to promote bitcoin and to support those mining it, do not.

Exactly this!

If an alt-coin is actually good it will have it's own community, people should go there to learn about it.

I agree alt should stay in alt.cur. section, I do though love this forum more than any other forum on the WWW, for bitcoin and litecoin. If there were more people like theymos :p, to make alt forums modded like bitcointalk, would be awesome.
