the workaround: click on advanced search and use the google search function...
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=search;advanced

This problem has been discussed many times before, it would be nice of you if you validated my answer, then closed to topic so it doesn't get filled by exactly the same replies as all the other times the same question was asked...

It just takes some getting used to and patience but it works. Make sure you are in the correct subsection before searching as well.
