I just realize on coinmarketcap that some coins are called Asset (TIME, Tether, OmiseGo... ) while some are called Currency (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple...). What is the difference and which type is better to hold?

I was searching about this and I found out assets are only great when they create real projects, real solutions and so on. It must be very hard to find well developed, useful asset in compare to currencies.

Assets are better, currency can be considered as your asset. Assets are the things that you own (anything - money, cars, stocks etc.). Your asset might have a small value today but we will never know in the future Smiley Just like bitcoin Smiley Smiley

Assets should be better but they are more used for manipulations and speculations than usual coins and in most cases they are not so good after all. First eset coin backed for real value was URO coin , some maybe remembers..Its hard for me to believe in others similar projects after I was burnt once..

Currency or Coins are like bitcoin a coin.
Asset or tokens are more like a share of a project.  Most of this Asset tokens come from ICOs. Their main problem is that normally countries regulate such projects to secure asset owners so shareholders. all of it is sort of shady. Not only those that issued and sold asset and did it just to scam, but also those with good projects that will work hard to achieve them.  I think all will need to answer some questions at the end.

There are no important differences between asset and currency, assets are usually designed for a project and used in a platform while currencies is mostly like bitcoin.

So sad that you encountered such a bad experience! Assets are far better than coins. They can be sued for various purposes, besides assets keep on increasing in worth with time. I am myself treating bitcoins as an asset than as a currency. We can use paper money as a currency, why to waste bitcoins?

As I understood assets are tied to different objects. You have asset = you are having a portion of something. But coin values are tied to only demand and supply.

That’s true. Asset simply means that you are having some portion of a valuable thing. Asset is always related to objects, they could be expensive and precious metals such as gold, diamonds etc or some weapons etc. Obviously the currencies are related to value and are dependent on circulation to work properly.

Cryptocurrencies are usually mineable, assets are a portion of some product or project. Their main goal is to provide fund for projects.

Technically, all the ones listed are digital assets, if I am not mistaken. But I think, in the context of the question and the place they are used, the definition of currency is just cryptocurrency that has its own blockchain or other consensus network... Bitcoin is the clearest example here. Tokens are simply "created" upon these currencies. They have no actual purpose other than to provide some form of value and are linked or stored on these other crypto network.

One example I see: Ethereum network or blockchain. This is the currency. All the tokens created by ICOs stored on ETH blockchain.

Hi all.

Interesting topic of conversation, I love the idea of holding crypto as an asset, is there anywhere I could find a full list of the coins listed as assets. Very new to all of this and not sure which avenue to start looking in.

Thanks in advance.

You are right. Currency and asset are poles apart. Asset is always some commodity that is related to an object. You can’t use all the time your asset to fulfill your daily needs. On the other hand currency is something that has set price and is mutually accepted by all people of a particular state.
