Waste of energy when you mine at low mining rig but if you have the lamborgini like gpu think it like profitable. Saying that should mine altcoin. If you like no waste of energy try trading and cloudmining  Smiley

You could say that banks and gold mining are a waste of energy, too.

And then there are energy efficient altcoins like the ones that are mined with HDDs or smartphones.
yes i am agree with you. it is same mantality.

Yes, bitcoin mining is not profitable as it might seems. it is better to invest your money into bitcoin than buying mining contract.
I think buying and holding bitcoin is more profitable than mining bitcoins. If your are good and can even start trading bitcoins for more profits.

Does anyone know what is the ROI of bitcoin ? like for every $ in bitcoin, how much do you need to spend on a TCO basis (i.e. power, cooling, etc ?)
Build ASIC and mine, you could ROI after 6 months. if you buy ASIC and mine, you could ROI after 1 year. without difficulty increasing over time.
But one good thing about Bitcoin mining, when price is $6500 you could mine for 2 weeks before difficulty increases and cost you more money to mine.
Bitcoin price is not rising due to difficulty rising.
Cloud mining is a waste of energy, unless you could find a service which only rents you their ASIC miners and charges you no extra fee for electricity.

Isn't Bitcoin mining a waste of energy?

It's not a waste if it is efficient or it does its job and mine bitcoins more than the cost of your electricity. I find miners efficient workers since the work almost 24/7 with little maintenance if set upped properly. But if you are concern about your energy resources then you may want to consider shifting to renewable energy sources for your miner like solar panels.

Isn't Bitcoin mining a waste of energy?

Depends on the efficiency of your rig.  If you have a good rig you could make a lot, whereas if your rig is bad then you might lose money or make nothing.

its only a waste of energy if your power costs a lot or if you're using a bad miner.

First....
There is NO energy in this Universe.....Electricity is NOT energy...

Now to answer the question..properly rephrased.

In 2012 when I first started mining bitcoins it was a HUGE waste of electricity and I did so KNOWING it was a HUGE waste of money...

However the value of those bitcoins today GROTESQUELY DWARFS those costs....And paid for tons of hard drugs booze and hookers and fast cars.

I guess it depends on your opinion. Much of the energy that humans use is a waste of resources really. In any case bitcoin is not particularly green. So, maybe?

I agree with this, most of the energy used in our homes are not being used efficiently even though miners uses a lot energy it is more likely efficient compare to most of the gadgets and appliances in our home. Bitcoin would either be green or not depends on your energy sources, but I suggest you go green and use renewable energy sources.

Isn't Bitcoin mining a waste of energy?

When the time came that bitcoin is useless then we can say that the mining was a waste of energy, but as of now since bitcoin is having a part on the economy and just having its use then it is not a waste of energy.

No doubt that mining is an expensive and hard work based procedure and in a sense it is really a waste of time but when you are mining with low quality systems, inefficient hardware and expensive electricity. If you are mining with best quality computer system, efficient hardware and low cost electricity and if you have installed large number of computer system so you can successfully mine more than enough valuable bitcoin for your future. I think an attempt should be made to mine bitcoin but not with solar electricity because it us much costly than hydropower electricity.

Always an energy produced from anything will never go waste. When there are so many earning more from mining, why this seems to be a time and energy waste. Find out what is truly required to get the targeted. Check with others who are already into it. Learn from them how to play smart and get the things succeeded.

Isn't Bitcoin mining a waste of energy?

When you talk about bitcoin then its mostly mined in big amount of GPU miners in order to get decent amount. Yes it sucks most of your powers.

It's totally based on your choice on which coin you choose and current consumption charges in your region if you worried about cost.
I think its not like wasting energy because we are mining golds to increase our fiat. Just like that power and equipped rigs to mine them.
It needs a good investment and your research will help you to choose the ways.
