Forgive me I know very little about computers, I can barely type. I bought some btc years ago they are on a Bitcoin-Qt v08.5 beta wallet. I tried to send them to an exchange but didn't know to add fee. the trans action has been stuck but some (about a third) came back. I have no idea what to do. I am scared to death I am going to lose them.

Is there someone locally who you trust competely and can help you? There are many possibilities to get your Bitcoins to a more modern wallet, but if you barely know what you're doing, it's tricky to give remote help.

For now the most important things:
-make sure your wallet.dat is safe: keep a backup (or more than one) in a safe place
-do not send your wallet.dat to anybody who may ask you (also in private messages)
-do not send any private keys to anybody

Good advice.

@blaklab If it's possible for you, please post transaction ID.

It's safe as in: nobody can steal your Bitcoins. But by showing this, you publish your Bitcoin address, and the amount you're holding. It gives away some privacy. If you're okay with that, you can post it.

A txid looks like this: f580cdf825d1d96cbc0b6c60a7688fb5c2bda4565663043880ddfb7befa49ba7
If you copy it into the Search field on https://blockchain.info/ , it shows you the transaction details, like this: https://blockchain.info/tx/f580cdf825d1d96cbc0b6c60a7688fb5c2bda4565663043880ddfb7befa49ba7 .

It's called "change" https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Change
I wouldn't advice you to send those coins are they are not confirmed yet.

As advised, can you please post the txid (assuming you don't mind giving up some privacy)... it's hard to fully understand what is happening with your transaction without being able to see the details.

It's quite possible that your transaction has already been dropped from the network... but your wallet still has it in its list.  If that is the case, then the transaction can be removed, and your coins should "reappear".

But, to confirm this, we'll need your transaction id.

I can't find it anymore, after a few days unconfirmed transactions disappear from the network.
I don't know why 30% came back, but you're using a very old wallet (Bitcoin-Qt v08.5 beta wallet). Is it even fully synced?

Look up your address (this looks like 1CK6KHY6MHgYv......................) on https://blockchain.info/ , does it show the same balance as your Bitcoin Core shows?
Does it show any recent transactions?

yes it is synced

Well you can try this method but first take a backup of your wallet.dat

1:  Use this method to remove that unconfirmed transaction, since you are using QT, this option might work.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1238034.msg12890218#msg12890218

Quote
Backup Wallet (always before messing with your wallet)
Start->Run->type "cmd" -> hit enter, a black command prompt window should appear
    Type

Code:

"C:\Program Files\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe" -zapwallettxes

in the window and hit enter

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=35214.msg14878906#msg14878906

2. Most preferable option is to export your private keys and import them on electrum.org or blockchain.info wallet and spend those coins again with atleast 0.001 BTC fees.

3. Install bitcoin core and run it, do not delete anything. Since your bitcoin is fully synced it should show your transactions and if it does and first option does not work, you can try to abandon that transaction.

Someone locally who can help you is much better indeed.

Bonus tip: your Bitcoins are also holding BItcoin Cash (currently worth $579 per Bitcoin you have). After securing/selling your Bitcoin, this would be the next thing you want to look into.
For now, I wouldn't do anything else, just wait a week. And please post back here if you have either more questions or when you've solved your problem.
