in regards to the AMD options, i would go 1800x since currently its only $20-40 more on ebay to buy it over a 1700.

If your into high-end AMD, my 1950x with latest tweaks to xmr stack, im hashing 1307, nearly $2 dollars a day.

One thing that interest me is the rumor about the newest AMD cpu's, some rumors already bouncing around that the new Ryzen 7 2700U is putting out 207 hash on 19 watts cpu power, just seems way to good

Also another interesting idea i recent became interested in, someone built a mining rig out of old cell phones, he bought up network locked higher end cell phone for dirt cheap or ones with cracked screens and is making more off mining with them over his RX480 mining rig... he is getting 48 hash off the old galaxy s5's

the key on ryzens is price.

I got a 20% off ebay deal and grabbed the 1800x     it makes 83 cents a day  using only 45 extra watts  which  is about 1 kwatt a day  which during cold weather is 10 cents for power..  so I make 73 cent profit on the ryzen each day  so 300 days =  219 back.

since I use waterblock  no overheating no issues . I also think that board does the best for  hashing on the 4x 1080tis and 1x 1070

hi phil,

you recommended:
2 x EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti SC2 GAMING
1 x ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Mini

The evga cards are not blower type. Are they going to be okay heat wise?

I am guessing they would be fine on open air/no case build?

but for a build inside a case, I would need blower type cooler right?

closed case

all blower for the ti's

and use a gigabyte 1070 itx

https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GeForce-GDDR5-Graphics-GV-N1070IXOC-8GD/dp/B01JD2OSX0/ref=sr_1_17?

I use this seller as he does not charge sales tax.

the 1070  set at 65% tdp

top of case

1080ti = blower

1080ti = blower

1070 itx

I like this case

Thoughts on getting ryzen cpu mining? Thinking about using one in my next 6 card build --best bang for buck a 1700x or 1800x?

1700 - which overclocks almost IDENTICAL to the 1700x or 1800x and can get to the SAME hashrate as a result - but I've yet to see a GOOD Ryzen-based motherboard for mining with that didn't cost way too much to date.
1700 is also the highest Ryzen model that normally includes the HS/Fan (mid-range AMD Spire which keeps it pretty cool for air cooling even when pushing it) - everything higher you need to add a few $$ for a cooler of some sort.

Also, for perspective - AMD FX 8xxx series monero hashrates are pretty close to Ryzen hashrates, but the CPUs themselves are a LOT less expensive, the motherboards are less expensive, a lot more CHOICES on motherboards, and the RAM is a hair less expensive.
Higher power draw, but not by all that much.

On the recent topic, question to you phil as well as everyone else here

As of right now . . what would be the best bang for buck ROI cards (with current prices)? 1070s?

I like the Zotac Mini 1070, but they're pushing the form factor quite a bit for cooling on the 1080 version and I don't even want to THINK about how hot the 1080ti version has to run.

Do your Zotac Mini 1070s run hot compared to other 1070s?
I have considered buying some...but am a bit apprehensive because my  Zotac Mini 1060s need higher fan speeds to stay cool enough when compared to my EVGA 1060s.

The Zotac 1070 mini runs pretty close to same temp on the 1070 model as any other 1070 I have EXCEPT the MSI Aero mini.
The Zotac 1080 mini though runs QUITE A BIT hotter than any other 1080 model I have.

Gigabyte ITX runs pretty cool, but it is one of the lower-clocked 1070 models out there.
MSI Aero runs quite hot despite being low clocked - I won't be buying any more of those for any reason.

My EVGA 1070 FTW DT3 in a sealed up Define R5 case with 100% gpu load at stock clocks sits at 66c.  Low cfm fans in case, and the system is rather quiet.  It sits about 6Ft in front of me and I rarely notice its sound.....

You'd be surprised at how efficient those EVGA ACX3.0 coolers are....

I am guessing they would be fine on open air/no case build?

but for a build inside a case, I would need blower type cooler right?

For a case build, the EVGA SC2 cards should have good enough cooling, but a switch to the ASUS "Turbo" blower card would probably run cooler, or even to any of the Founder Edition cards.

The Zotac mini is long enough to partly block the blower intake of the middle card, AND it's going to be blowing HOT air into that blower intake - NOT recommended for a rig in a case.

For case builds, I'm fond of the Thermaltake H34/H35 series cases - you DEFINITELY need a case that has "8 peripheral slots" and some SPACE between the end of the motherboard and the PS or edge of the case so that end card can get some AIR into it.

Still good cooling, just not quite AS good.

in a case

2 asus blower 1080 ti you can do around 80 tdp
1 gigabyte itx 1070    you can do 70 tdp

I use the rosewill stealth

and swap the stock fans with the bgears.

I did 5 rosewill stealth builds

one is 2 msi aero 1080 ti blower cards
with a msi aero 1070 itx

these are cool builds
I even did one with a intel 7900x cpu 12 threads pulls high watts.  but is not as good as the ryzen 1800x.

no overheating .

but I never go over 80% tdp on cards.

the 1080ti mini by zotac
the 1080 mini
the 1070 mini   are good on open builds  as the end card.

May I ask an off-topic question on taxes here? Where can I learn more on how to do that if I dump invest more money into gear before the end of the year? Assuming I don't run a business and file as an individual in US.

DT is their dumbed down and cheaper version of FTW with slower cock and overall less OC'able. Just something to keep in mind...

I'm just filing as an individual. Schedule C I believe it is called. I add up all my "expenses" for my "self employment" and if I show a net loss they do not tax me. Crazy huh? So my options are 1) show profit and pay a lot of taxes 2) reinvest it all into more hardware and continue making more money

It sounds like "Sole Proprietorship" filing with Schedule C showing net loss in addition to the day-job wage income is possible. I was afraid I'd have to deal with setting up an LLC or partnership at a minimum. Thanks!

Nvidia - here I come! LOL

BTW, NVDA has hit ATH at $206 earlier today...

That's actually very easy to do. Get the cooler off, locate the resistors, apply liquid metal (I used Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut) and put the cooler back on.

Best way to make sure you don't fuck things up is to follow a proper guide. Go to youtube and search for a guy called der8auer. He's a legend in the modding/extreme overclocking community.

You have to bear some things in mind though: Pascal cards have 3 limits: Power, voltage and temp. If you get rid of one, the other two will still limit you. Get proper (water) cooling and that's 2/3 done. Voltage is trickier. Some bioses out there allow for more juice. You'll have to check whether it can be flashed to your specific card.

Sweet thanks man! I'll test on one of my TIs. Winter is coming and I can have ambient temps around these cards at -10C~5C for the next 3 or so months.
In cold months last year I was able to do benchmark runs with water temp as low as 4C Smiley
...which allowed me to get the top spot in HWbot for water-chilled 5960X + GTX1080 combo in Futuremark TimeSpy Smiley

Completely useless for mining though, considering the cooling power needed! Cheesy

in order to deduct gear  you need some type of business .  I sell on ebay  and do a small business schedule c.

I can wrap it into that and still do an individual return.

Vega64 can do 2000 H/s using cast-xmr using first soft power table reg for Vega 64 (1100MHz HBM @ 905mV)  from https://www.reddit.com/r/MoneroMining/comments/74hjqn/monero_and_vega_the_definitive_guide/ at ~210W
But can do also 1800 H/s using a low power reg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Uq3Om2MXOE at ~135W.
