Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

I attended the openday today. Met bitcoinorama and a few others. It was pretty informative, we got through allt the questions and then some. It's probably gonna take him a while to write up all the q&a's, and he should have an audio recording to help him out. I got the same impression as the last crew. They seemed really confident to be able to get product out by september, multiple buffers and backups along the way. They couldnt understand how/why it could have gone so wrong for bfl.

Some good news from the openday, finally. So after visiting what is your honest impression? Are you investing in them?

Well, they kinda could actually. Bfl arent asic designers like orsoc. But they were kinda impressed with what the so called "amature college students" were able to acheive with theire Avalons.

The impression i got was: they wont make any money, untill we make money from theese machines, and come back for a second order around christmas. Thats when they'l start seeing any profit. They want theese machines out to us asap, and they have a more than qualified chip-design team (with all the necessary framework) to back them up.
They seem to have gotten it mostly right up untill now. Lets hope they keep the trend up.

These machines will be 10x as expensive when they gain trust.

From the sound of it, they're quite happy with the prising as it is.

So is it your impression that by New Years there will be a newer model miner?

They said earlier that they would be keeping a close eye on hash/$ ratio during development. Does this mean that they might increase the hashing power of the machines closer to shipping if the difficulty increases too much or the price of btc drops significantly ?
