Every pool I've checked has 0.5 XMR payout threshold.  One did have 0.4 but big whoop.  Too high.

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

supportxmr is 0.3 XMR to wallet, FIVE XMR to exchange, are they kidding??  Is that customizable?

Does XMR have high fees, is that why pools have such high payout thresholds?

Yep. Mymonero is the easiest way to create a wallet, using those keys you can later import account to local wallet. If running a full node is a no-go you can use gui-wallet with remote node.

Dwarfpool with 0.1 treshold + mymonero maybe?

The very high fee for pay-to-exchange is neither a cruel joke nor done out of greed. The problem with payments to exchanges via paymentId is that the latter executes in isolation instead of being combined with dozens of other payments in a batch transaction which incurs high transaction fees for the pool. If exchanges would finally make the switch to integrated addresses all of this nonsense would not be necessary.

By the way, our (young) pool has a 0.25 XMR payout threshold (1 XMR to Exchange)

MPH also charges 0.015 fee.  Still, it's a cheap way to test an address rather than risking 0.5 XMR.
