Hello friends,

I have a ASRock Fatal1ty 990fx motherboard where I am trying to install multiple GPUs.  The problem I am having is that I am only able to install one GPU.  If I try to add a second or more, the system will not boot up at all.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Below are the specs...

Motherboard:  ASRock Fatal1ty 990fx
Processcor:     AMD 4.2 Ghz
RAM:              8 GB Fury High speed
GPUs:             ASUS Geforce GTX 1060 6 GB x 5

Thank you,
Huck

What kind of PSU are you using?

Are you always connecting the monitor to the graphics card in the physical x16 slot closest to the CPU?

I am using a Corsair 1200 watt.  Yes, I am always connecting the monitor to the GPU card in the closest to the CPU slot.

Thank you,
Huck

Mine just showed up from Newegg today, but I probably won't get to it for a day or two as I'm working on a different machine right now.

I never had any issues with their 970FX Extreme4 or the single 990FX Extreme3 I've got in my rigs though on multi-GPU usage.

Are you building a riser rig, or putting all of the cards on the MB?

Have you tried each card IN the MB to make sure they are all good?

Perhaps it might be a bad riser?

I am building a riser rig.  All GPUs and riser work fine in PCIe position one.  I tested each one and all are good by themselves.  If I try to connect 2 it fails.

Thanks,
Huck

Have you tried clearing CMOS, reseating the CPU, and reseating the RAM?

If you can't get it to boot with two cards, both installed directly in the motherboard's physical x16 slots, then I'm not sure what to tell you.
Perhaps your motherboard is defective.

If your mobo appears to be defective, maybe you will try a brand based on Intel chipset next time. They are known as consuming less power compared to AMD based ones.

No clue then, mine is running with 3 cards in the MB just fine once I got the system put together last night.

I'm starting to incline towards the "defective board" crowd.

And for the record, Intel boards tend to be noticeably MORE expensive for comparable capabilities vs AMD, and the CPUs are a LOT more expensive - the power usage differences are MINIMAL where they exist at all.

Try finding ANY 6-core CPU in the current-in-production Intel lineup for less than ... what, $400 something? As opposed to the FX8320e or the FX8350 or even the FX 8370 all at well under $150 with *8* cores.

I grant that the FX series is lower performance per core, but they're about the SAME hashrate on Monero (for one applicable example) that the Ryzen manages.

It cannot be the motherboard because I can boot up to ethOS and all GPUs are seen correctly.  There has to be some sort of Windows something missing.  I have not found it just yet.  All drivers are installed.  I'll keep looking.  Please let me know if you think of anything else.

Sometimes you have to install one card, let Windows find drivers for it and install them, reboot, install a second card, etc.

I've seen that mentioned a few places, but never ran into it myself - but it's not riser-rig specific.
