I'm looking for information on the "light client", since AFAIK this would allow Bitcin to replace some current uses of cash in everyday use.

Searching the wiki for "Light client" didn't turn up anything, and while I found the thread at http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=6133.0 I suppose there's more information out there.

Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

Lightest "client" would be https://www.instawallet.org/. Especially if you want to move small sums.

There really isn't much more info. That thread at least covered the basics. Are you looking for something in particular?

Is there a prototype implementation?

For which usage scenarios would the light client be an improvement? For which ones would it be a necessity?

Anything on how it would work.
