Mining hardware question

I would like to ask what would be the best to invest in for Bitcoin mining? Is it graphics cards, custom hardware or what? Looking for some suggestions.

The answer is it depends.

With current asics you can mine sha256 based coins faster with less power usage. However, they can't be used for anything else.

With GPUs you can mine any coin, but slower with more power usage.
