Back before it became completely impossible to mine with a PC, bitminter was my introduction to mining.  I hope you are pleased with how easy and accessible your software and mining pool make it for new comers.

Definitely. I hope it helped some people get started with mining and perhaps even with bitcoin. Getting close to 340 000 registered users now.

Now that it is almost impossible for newbies to mine without ASICs, have you given any consideration to doing a bitminter for an altcoin?

I thought about it sometimes. But most altcoins appear to be scams people came up with to make themselves rich. They have no purpose and crap code. Or usually they don't even have code, just the bitcoin code and a quick search-replace of the name bitcoin to something else. And after one or two rounds of pump-and-dump they die off. An altcoin pool would probably have to replace the coins as they die off and new scamcoins are hyped up. I'd probably feel that I was taking part in scamming people.

Thanks for explaining!  I have wondered about this for some time and it makes perfect sense.  I hope one day an alt coin comes along that meets your criteria and is still minable by PCs as I think there is a lot to be gained by understanding things from the miner's perspective.

I know it sounds crazy, but have you ever considered "HariboCoin" or something?  You can even say, "Like most other alt coins IMO this coin is total crap, but it is minable on your PC so you can at least become familiar with the mechanics of mining without having to invest in ASICs."  Who knows, at least since everyone would know that you are not going away, it might become a really successful coin!

Regardless, thanks again for your work.

To create a successful new coin you really have to create something significantly better than bitcoin. And even then bitcoin may just copy your new fancy feature and you lose anyway.

Even if you could beat bitcoin it probably makes more sense to work WITH bitcoin instead.

I dont know, but I like the sound of "HariboCoin, Drcoin, Doccoin, or even Hcoin!"  Look at Dogecoin...but keep it to 10 - 20 million coins!

Sounds like it's having problems accessing the virtual serial ports while looking for ASIC devices.

Which ASIC devices do you have connected to your computer?

Yes, you probably have 64-bit windows so run the CP210xVCPInstaller_x64.exe
(run x86 if you have a 32-bit windows)

After you unzip the file from silabs you double click that exe file to run the installer, which will install the silabs driver on your computer.

If you got the silabs driver successfully installed and Bitminter client still fails to work, could you try bfgminer and see if that works?
