To the BitMinter developer,

I would like to truly congratulate you on putting together one one of the simplest ways of being involved in mining for Bitcoins. There will be a long preamble so that you will really appreciate why I'm thanking you.

I've been around computers for over half my life now, with my first experiences on a friends *nix box in the early 1980s, got my first dumpy Amstrad 8080 in 1988 and ever since then have built my on desktops, gone through about four laptops, and two Tatnung Sun clones for a five year period as a small ISP owner. Last year I finally gave up on Windoze and moved to *nix.

I remember compiling my first httpd daemon back in about 1994 on Solaris... and many other things. Modifying make files and all kinds of things but after more than years away from from that world I finally dove right back in last year.  Sorry but four hours to install Windows 7 was just too much, compared to *nix in under forty minutes.

For two days I had no luck compiling cgminer so I decided to go to bfgminer as an alternative.
Once I had all my dependencies installed I had it built in a matter of minutes. It brought back that pleasant feeling I had after having compiled and configured Sendmail for the very first time! for a domain which was ours and called internauts.ca . Just a small ISP focused on education, schools, community, seniors and others who needed a helping hand with technology - but when ADSL came to being we just couldn't compete.

Another two days of frustration in that it could not find any devices... it wasn't like there were many too look for.. So I gave up and started looking at other options.

A few hours ago I read a review of your mining pool and the software that you developed for it!
Within less than 10 minutes I had everything up and running and I've been contributing to your mining pool in the best way I can at a Hash rate of about 43Mhps. I know this is chump change compared to your monster with a funny name which I can't remember at the moment.

I only have one GPU working at the moment and it will remain that way for a while, but the concept of such a democratic crypto-currency really interest me in its role in society.  Last night after finishing a job I had from a client, I started thinking of just how good this is and how it could be. It is well thought out for some time in the future, it isn't some damn government just printing bills and screwing people over, and it is becoming more and more accepted globally. Most recently just read that Dell computers will be accepting Bitcoins as payment.

In any case, congratulations. You have put together a very viable front end that makes life really easy. Trust is important and I know you pool is quite small compared to some of the others out their but I have some ideas, that could help that grow. How feasible they are is another matter. I did put a lot of work into making Bitminter client easy to use, so that newbies would be able to mine bitcoins without first having to learn how to compile something, or even what the command line is.

You should look into ASIC mining hardware. Mining on a regular PC doesn't make sense any more. You'll pay more for the electricity than what you earn, and it will be so slow that you never get enough to cash out.

Edit: Note that the ASIC list above has some scams in the list, for instance Minerscube/Minersbox. Make sure you do some research first, and don't give your coins to scammers.

CPU mining became obsolete in 2011 and GPU mining in 2013. People use ASICs now.

The client actually still supports OpenCL-capable graphics cards. But you will spend more on electricity than what you earn, so the more you mine the more money you lose. And it is also so incredibly slow that you will never earn enough to actually cash out. I should probably disable GPU mining in the next version.

Apparently your graphics card doesn't support OpenCL. No big loss as it wouldn't make sense anyway.

Even with the best available CPU you can produce about 0.00004 BTC (that's 2 cents in $US) for this month (less next month and so on).

With the best available GPU 0.0005 BTC (that's 25 cents in $US) for this month (less next month and so on).

So, NOW, you need an ASIC machine (which probably will never Return your Investment!!!)

I tried bitminter software, but it does not find my Zeus blizzard on COM3:

All Bitcoin mining machines are supported. All Bitcoin mining clients (software) are supported.

But ZeusMiner Blizzard is a machine for making Litecoin. Bitminter is a pool for making Bitcoin.

Hi all ..... a week old newbie here and my first post .... hehe, please be gentle

I've been trying to get my head around everything, stage by stage.

I first tried out various wallets, found one I liked.

Then I tried out various pools, again, found one I liked and cracked on getting both my laptops mining using onboard GPU and the GUIminer software. I only went for GUIminer as I wasnt sure about command prompt things, had a quick try with bfgminer and cgminer but couldnt get em working, so initially struck with GUIminer.  Everything seemed to be working well, my shares were showing up in the pool and I was receiving confirmed BTC payouts (albeit a tiny fraction of a BTC, but at least everything was showing up).

So, move onto the next stage I thought and bought a little USB 336MH/s block eruptor. Again, this was only for testing, I realised from the start that I'd need to get a decent hardware miner, probably a couple of Antminer S3's
 
Anyway, got the USB stick and drivers working and showing up in windows (win7 on one machine, win8 on other) but it wouldnt show up in the GUIminer drop down. Had another play around with BFGminer and CGminer but my asic usb wasnt found, so again I gave up with those two.

So yesterday I stumble upon Bitminter and its own little app ..... very nice!!! Got it all up and running in 5 minutes. The asic USB and both laptops GPU's are mining, giving a total of 364Mhps  (335mhps + 18mhps + 11mhps) ..... all seems fine ......

EXCEPT ......

I've left both laptops running through the night and don't seem to have earnt any btc or fraction thereof. I realised that I'm still woefully lacking in Mhps and that will be solved end of the month with the S3's, but even when I mined with just a single laptop GPU, getting 15Mhps I showed up 0.00000018 BTC after one night (that was at Slush's).

As per things I've read earlier in this thread I've gone to 'my account' and 'workers' ...... Ghps = 0, proofs of work accepted = 6008
In 'my account' 'transaction history' it shows balance 0 BTC and 0.00001367 NMC. Now, the fact that NMC's are showing up in my account must mean that my mining software (bitminter) is talking to the pool ..... what am I missing

Hi folks!

I just got bfgminer working on a RHEL 7 GPU instance (g2.2xlarge) in AWS.  I have detailed the steps I followed in this blog post:

I have two main questions:

1.) How (or, after what period of time) can I confirm that the work being done on my instance is being logged to my bitminter username (jcombs)

2.) the "top" command in linux is saying that bfgminer is using 100% CPU.  The monitoring tab in the EC2 dashboard says that CPU utilization is at 12%.  I assume this is because bfgminer is using 1/8 available cores. This brings me to a few questions:

a.) How can I be sure that bfgminer is actually using the GPU and not just a cpu core?
b.) How can I tell bfgminer to use all available cores on the CPU?

Unfortunately mining has move to specialized ASIC hardware.

Mining on CPU ended in 2011 and GPU ended in 2013. You earn less than the electricity costs, so the more you mine the more money you lose. And it is so slow you never reach the minimum cash out amount, so you end up with nothing - just burning electricity.

I was definitely expecting to lose money.  I have a ton of AWS credit and wanted to see how many pennies on the dollar I could get with this project.

Do you (or have you heard) a back of the envelope guess at the rate for doing this with a GPU in this fashion?  Ten cents on the dollar? Worse?
