Don't be too sure about that. I have seen my friends participating in online dating. There are incidents where the relationship ends in a few hours. But for at least some of them, online dating helped to find their life-partners.

It all depends on two factors: The way the couple interacts and how often and far they actually are, in order to succeed they need to get in touch somehow, very few couples are going to last for years without actually being face-to-face at least once.

Online dating has far more negative impact than positive.In every long
term relationship, courtship is the bedrock.Online dating does not permit courtship
and this has failed several relationships as the online individual is usually a
different character in real life.As such, the partner becomes disappointed and
decides to go separate ways.I think that online dating is a temporary antidode

I don't think it's the most wonderful idea of making relationships. People are so easily blinded by the true nature of a person when it is not seen or met personally. It is also hard to make a relationship better with just dating online. The advantage I see here is that you can meet more people that will also allow you to find the most suitable partner for life.
