Bitcoin-QT for mac LOTS of CPU

Hello all,

I am running bitcoin qt on my mac.  While synchronizing to the network, it suddenly demands anywhere from 300% to 600% cpu in the activity monitor making my temp skyrocket.  Any assistance on this matter as I cannot synchronize and get my coins :/

Just a update here for anyone else having this problem.  It seems to be directly related to my fan speed!  Setting my fan speed to above 4000 rpm with smcfancontrol makes the bitocoin client start eating up CPU.

**EDIT nevermind it just occurs after a certain amount of time what the hell

CPU overheats..... threads cut back.... increasing fan speed reduces CPU temperature... threads expand to use available CPU.


Nubie conclusion....

bitcoind uses fan speed to validate block chain....

cool CPU's can go faster.

obviously a cool cpu can go faster.  That isn't the issue.  The issue is the bitcoin-qt client taking a reported "400%" of my cpu with 20 threads

launching the application with the argument -par=1 limits cpu use but also made the program sync in 3 days.

since you seem EXTREMELY knowledgeable on the subject, anyway you could help with this issue?

What version of MacOS and what version of BitcoinQt?

I recently installed it on my mac, and it took about a day to sync the blockchain, but other than that, I have had no problems.
Running OSX10.8 bitcoinqt v.0.8.1

edit: I see v.0.8.2 is out, I will install that and see if it makes a difference.

I have an Intel i5 iMac running OS 10.8.3 and have run the last few version of Bitcoin-qt on it.  I have not seen any excessive CPU usage.

I tried v8 client up and nothing. Seems like other people have reported having the same problem from what some of my searches turn up.

I have just tried it on my i7 MacBook running 10.8.3
I can confirm that I am also noticing occasional spikes in CPU usage from Bitcoin-Qt (and from Armory as well), but it drops down after a while. Also, when bitcoin-qt is first run and scanning the blockchain, CPU usage is maxed out for the several hours it is doing that.

Now that you have me watching it, I am also noticing these occasional (seemingly random) spikes in CPU usage on my iMac (i5, 10.8.3).

Anybody have any ideas? Some kind of glitch in the MacOs binaries? I haven't noticed this in Linux (on the same Macs), but maybe I haven't been paying close enough attention...

I've tried 20 wallets or so and the bitcoin wallet is the only client that sucks about 75% of my 3770k in spurts while updating blocks from a fresh wallet install.  It must have something to do with the algorithm.  Nothing to fear.

Im on a macbook pro, and everything is fine.

There is definitely strange behavior on the mac client if you watch it carefully. Seemingly random spurts of intense CPU usage, and I don't seem to get this on the same machine when I boot to Linux and run that client. Very strange.

Also, does anybody else use the Armory client on Mac. It is a little unstable at times, but it is a beta (and a first release for that matter), so maybe its to be expected.

Maybe I should just stick to blockchain.info wallet on my Mac and run everything else separately on a linux box.
