Based on the extent of my knowledge, the best wallet you can store your ethereum is the MEW or myetherwallet. Not only it can handle ethereum but also many other coins you can think of. It is also secure as it has many options before you can unlock your wallet, you may choose the hardest one for you to be more assured on your wallet status.

Hi All,

I setup my Ethereum wallet long ago, sometime in early 2016 if I remember correct. I saved my wallet in a safe place and since then I haven't used it.

Now, Ethereum has undergone several developments, 1 hard fork (Ethereum Classic) and so on. I would like to know which wallet should I use? Are the latest versions of the wallet compatible with previous versions? Can I import my old wallet file into a new one? I think the format of the wallet was in JSON before. Please let me know. Thanks.

Which Ethereum wallet are you specifically using, mate? I am using myetherwallet.com right now. When I came to crypto, myetherwallet.com is already the leading ETH and ETH-based tokens wallet. There is a JSON file also in this wallet. It can be used to open and send Ethereum and Tokens but you still need your password in the process. I hope it can still be accepted.

You can try using UTC / JSON on myetherwallet because I see they are compatible, hope you will get access to your wallet.

Myetherwallet.com was proven tested already for the eth users. Especially in the ico project campaign, this wallet is very useful anyway. But sometimes I wonder why some of the member in this forum they said that there wallet can't be open because they've been hacked. How come that they've became a victim of the hacker? there the one who keep the private key of their in MEW.

Use my ether wallet and everytime make sure the URL is correct , since there are some phishing sites and yeah downloading and installing the JSON file is better since It's encrypted with a password unlike saving the private key

he safest wallet is the offline wallet but there is still a risk that if the pc where you keep the offline wallet is destroyed then you can not do anything
print the wallet on a old printer with no internet connexion and no memory, then you can still lose the paper, so there is no safe, there is always a risk

The best wallet is your brain.
A wallet is not a website where are stored your coins, it's just an interface to link to the blockchain.
So whenever the date when you put your coins in the blockchain, it doesn't matter. If you remember your id's to log to it, you'll be able to bring your coins back.

By the way, generally wallets are not hacked, but humans are easily baited. By wrong links (fishing), by scam, by any way to give their id's to a wrong person. If you use a wallet which is just an interface (like myetherwallet for example), you can't hack it, as it doesn't store anything.

I personally use myetherwallet.com. For trading, it's quite useful.

There are also these hardware wallets.

https://trezor.io/
https://www.ledgerwallet.com/

Haven't used them but my buddies vouch for the trezor wallet.
