There are essentially two ways of acquiring bitcoins. The first is to buy them on an online exchange, where a person can transfer local currency, such as Australian dollars, for bitcoins.

Bitcoin addresses contain a checksum, so it is very unlikely that mistyping an address will cause you to lose money.

The usual stuff, "balanced" with a mildly sneering tone, as hinted at by the snide link name element "bit player".

"But there is a dark side to digital currencies such as bitcoin. In most countries, the exchanges are not regulated.

This means that they are vulnerable to money laundering and other illegal activities."

Yawn.
