Well, they can buy down 21 million BTC and keep all of them to themselves, essentially 'killing' Bitcoin. On a serious note, no, I feel that it is difficult for them to do so. Even if countries like China tries to ban Bitcoin in their own country, they cant exactly do so to the whole world, and there will always be a use for Bitcoin somewhere else.

Bitcoin is still gaining popularity, and its community is growing, so unless all the governments team up and say NO to BTC, it would not happen (I hope).

Most people wouldn't risk getting fined or imprisoned just to use an alternative payment system, so Bitcoin community wouldn't be able to grow to any significant size. And the second problem is mining - right now it's relatively centralized and draws huge amounts of electricity - together it makes it easy to shut it down. Without mining Bitcoin's price can't freely grow, because mining protects the network from double-spending attacks, so when hashrate is low the network becomes less secure, meaning it's cheaper to attack it, so it can't sustain above certain amounts of value.

It would be nearly impossible for Governments to kill Bitcoin, even though they could certainly cause a lot of havoc and even push bitcoin into the underground, which could cause bitcoin to become a bigger pain in the ass for them.

So in that sense governments have a bit of a dilemma regarding how much to attempt to regulate bitcoin and how oppressive they can be towards bitcoin.

The thing that makes me believe that it won’t happen is that there are many different countries around the world and they are not going to view Bitcoin the same way. Some countries may ban Bitcoin or want to ban it, but others may embrace it. So even if a country had major regulations against Bitcoin, they can’t make other countries do the same thing. It seems to me that the faster the government will ban bitcoin than regulating it. None of the above can happen btc network works because of mining and it is spread out across the world stopping every single miner is impossible. Getting accepted is also not possible because of btc not having any legal entity.

What you are saying doesn't make any sense if we won't be able to withdraw our funds to fiat what's the use of holding btc , why would people even accept it the only reason it is so famous today is because of it's value and it is also a liquid asset if that goes it will have no purpose.

However, it is the last thing they want to do. Government is mainly chosen by the people around the world where democracy exists. The main reason why we choose government so that we can have job, start a business with ease and proper infrastructure with low crime rates. But the majority of the governments miserably fails to do their job.

In such times, if their citizens can earn some income without asking for a job, that's a good news for them. Most people wouldn't risk getting fined or imprisoned just to use an alternative payment system, so Bitcoin community wouldn't be able to grow to any significant size. Its an interesting question - but I think that any government that did this would basically be saying in no uncertain terms that they are the final arbiters of all money created.

It would mean that they are saying that you are not allowed to trade freely and that you are stuck with the currency of the country that you trade with.

Technically stopping bitcoin is not possible till the last country on earth is allowing it. We need to understand that bitcoin is a peer to peer crypto currency. I think, government can't like literally close down bitcoin, destroy all the mines and somehow prohibit having a bitcoin wallet. So in a way, for some geeks and bitcoin enthusiasts, they can mine and send their coins like forever. But even as simple thing as closing down exchanges would kill bitcoin. Exchanges have to meet the countries regulations and they can't be random places and if there are no means to change bitcoins to dollars most of the investors and traders would abandon it totally. If ever the government and banks have agreed upon banning bitcoin in their country, then people can't do anything but follow the order especially if there are consequences of violating that order. It would be hard to stop bitcoin completely. Every country has strict laws against drugs and drug trafficking with severe punishments, and in many countries people are executed for selling drugs, but did it ever stop anyone who is involved in the business? It just made risk premiums higher. However people can always plead in front of the law to make the life easier and humanly by putting the humble request. This is what law gives, a power to human rights. However, they can slow down the growth of mass adoption because many would not want to risk to be imprisoned or be fined by using it. Well, Bitcoin doesn't really need much network bandwidth to have nodes running and validating transactions. Someone with a basic 3g connection from a burner phone(bought with cash) could easily get internet from their phone onto their computer and run node/wallet software(mining too if it was absolutely needed).

I think you made a good point here. If governments try to ban bitcoin or make it illegal, people can still try to use it underground anyway, and they will spend a lot more time and money, trying to catch those who are using it illegally. If they just regulate it, to make it harder to use it for illegal activities, like they try to do with fiat already, then they will be able to get tax revenues for those that have no intentions of doing any illegal things with it, and just want to use it because they find it convenient.

I've watched the movie "bitcoin hacker". and there, the subject matter is:
the government is worried if bitcoin is used as a means of money laundering by the mafia. then, the government and the state police are trying to find the bitcoin holders. after watching the movie, I also became worried if it happened. hopefully nobody takes advantage of bitcoin for criminal purposes, so there is no problem with the government and bitcoin can continue to exist.

Governments are certainly not as powerful as they want to be or want us to believe they are. We hear it now and then that some especially rogue government has been overthrown by people, so it is not like they are almighty and all that. If all the countries will ban BTC then for example an overall BAN, people will have no choice, especially the legit ones will just sell all their coins and some miners will be forced to halt their operations BTC price will incredibly drop, it's not a matter of do you think they could stop BTC, but as we all know BTC purely relies on its supply and its users so even if there are people who are still using it in case of an overall BAN, there will be a lot of people who will sell and BTC will be again go in the dark market only.

You would have to decomission every computer that runs bitcoin mining software, and those are distributed all around the globe.
What governments can do is to make it harder for the people to exchange bitcoin into the local fiat. But that's it.

I think not all government to all country is have the same thinking about bitcoin some of them think that bitcoin is a big help to their economy and their people. And some them are ban bitcoin to their country because they scared that bitcoin will be choose their people than to their own currency. There's a lot of circumstances and reasons but I think they never kill bitcoin.

Yes the government have the power to restrain and allow any form of investment, products, medium of exchange. For some reason I think the government would only do this if they have seen that bitcoin from their area have cause some problems like drug trades illegal activities and the like the government have the power to cease the use of this medium to lessen the illegal activities that its citizens have conducted.

I think it is impossible for the government to do that. Any attempt to control Bitcoin won't work. The government and regulatory bodies have shown lack of understanding of technological topics and Bitcoin is one of the most complex. As government struggle to ban technologies, it seems impossible to imagine them gaining the ability to truly impact bitcoin and its contemporaries ina a way that could impede its progress.

Bitcoin has no centre to attack. There is no single organisation or person that controls Bitcoin and transactions don't go through a central clearing house there is really no way a regulator can stop people from downloading Bitcoin wallets and sending each other bitcoins. If there we to block all the websites that people can download Bitcoin wallets from, new ones will come up and some people will compile their own wallets from source code - Bitcoin is like Bittorrent is that respect. If they shut down the internet, people will send each other Bitcoin via SMS and if they shut down the electricity supply, people will use solar and battery-powered solutions.

Well, there is 16.985.737 BTC supply around the world right now, IF ...IF 1 government want to spend their money to buy all of bitcoins, and keep it for themself to bury it, maybe they could stop bitcoin. But, who want to spend that large amount of money just on one thing???

Yes of course, if they want to order the court and making a tight regulation to avoid searching and viewing of the said respective site and whose person violated  the said regulation is punishable by low. That's particular order is enough to kill that particular site.
