The State Bank of Vietman has issued “Information related to the use of virtual currency” that bans use of the cryptocurrency for payments.

It won’t say why, and doesn’t explicitly ban mining or blockchain.

The Bank lists conventional payment mechanisms like cheques, payment orders and credit cards as permitted, but then adds (after translation) that “Bitcoin virtual currency and other similar is not lawful means of payment in Vietnam; The issuance, supply, use of bitcoin and other similar virtual currency as a means of payment is prohibited in Vietnam.”

Fines of around US$9,000 apply to those who accept or offer payments in virtual currencies.

Why the Bank decided to make the statement is unclear, but it’s not hard to guess why: Vietnam’s government is a little like China’s in that it permits private enterprise but remains a single-party communist state. Virtual currencies’ represent a threat to command economies that such regimes find hard to tolerate, as China’s shuttering of Bitcoin exchanges and Russia’s attempts to do likewise demonstrate.

The ban does not, however, mention mining or exchange of virtual currencies, leaving open the possibility that Vietnam will permit cryptocurrency-or-blockchain-related activity. So long as they’re not used to buy and sell stuff.

Vietnam’s trying to reform its economy, is already winning manufacturing work from China and attracting considerable foreign investment. It’s not hard to imagine blockchain making a splash there, even if Bitcoin is banished from commerce.

The Vietnamese government banned bitcoins. but as far as I know from a friend in vietnam. He said many people are still investing in bitcoin even though it was banned. I think the Vietnamese government forbids bitcoin. but will not affect the price of bitcoin
Yes Vietnam is the country that officially banned digital currencies and their use as payment methods.
But  Vietnam  didn’t contribute too much to the overall trading volumes. So there are no effect to bitcoin's price globally
we can see price of bitcoin is more than $7000/bitcoin and it will be rise more expensive especially after the bitcoin hard fork
of course if the bitcoin hard fork be sucessfull.

lol, people can look the price of BTC. It has reached the new peak. If one country ban Bitcoin lead to prices increasing, I want all countries in the world ban Bitcoin. Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
You're probably joking but it should be pretty clear that countries banning Bitcoin does have a negative effect on Bitcoin's price.
Just because it's not the case now doesn't mean that it won't be like this when a larger country decides to ban the use of Bitcoin.

Fact is that Vietnam is a smaller country and there has been other news that has driven the price up for now.

With the link At least they are just banning bitcoin as a form of payment so technically vietnamese people can still pruchase bitcoin and they can still also trade and invest on it.

I do not know how the Vietnam government works but why banks can set laws in their country. If that bank is a part of their government well the crytocurrency  market does not seem to care we are seeing all time high as i write this post.

If a super country like China was not able to stop Bitcoin I think Vietnam banning Bitcoin as a payment will not affect the crypto currency market.

First china now vietnam following. China can not stop and now vietnam. It does not mean anything for bitcoin price. Bitcoin is flying in sky now. No one can stop it.

What happen?? Bitcoin is really the unstoppable and most amazing cryptocurrency because its price is increasing and we dont really have the problem to banned unless your government will not accept it. As i see you are using bitcoin now as a means of payment but why vietnam banned it??

The State Bank Of Vietnam gave a statement that harsh actions will be taken against the people who will use Bitcoin or any other crypto currency for their transaction purpose. But,I don't think that this statement will have any negative impact on Bitcoin because Bitcoin is decentralized in nature so statement by a person or government will not influence it. As in the month of september we saw that China banned ICO's and exchanges. This effected the price on temporary basis but the price again boosted up and now it has reached it's all time high value i.e. 7250$.

Well it is sad news for us that another country issues ban against bitcoin although the ban hasn't made an impact on the price but what is the main reason why they ban bitcoin as payment? and also, if they ban bitcoin as a mode of payment, will they can still able to just hold bitcoin and free to use their own bitcoins and use bitcoin exchanges and other services? whatever the reason of banning the Vietnamese bitcoin community is pretty small to affect the price after all.

That's what is awesome on cryptocurrency. They can ban but they can't control their population to buy and sell bitcoin because of a thing called descentralization. Vietnam is a country very interested on bitcoin since the begin and it's a clearly politician move, because they use bitcoin as a method for money laundry.

They're just drawing a line and making a blanket statement before proceeding to tax and regulated Bitcoin, they're sort of following China's lead on this. They know they're powerless against it at the moment it's mostly a futile effort on the Vietnamese Government's part but this is their plan of action before they get on board with the rest of the modern age.

Just another example of a government making stupid decisions that will cost them in the long run. They will miss out on all

the potential tax income and the new job opportunities and also the advancement in this new technology. The rest of the

world moves forward and they will stay behind.  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

They decided for repeating like China, let them do what they want.  Of course, this does not lead anything good, less investment becomes more and more frequent, but on the other hand there are other investors from other countries. Perhaps they also want make their own cryptocurrency like China.

I'm not underestimating Vietnam but the price is not affected by this so called banning of bitcoin as payment in that country. People now are more educated than before, no government can stop bitcoin. I am happy for the Vietnamese even though they have this kind of banning, they are still given the freedom to own one. Maybe in time, this ban will be lifted and continue the use of bitcoin.

Bitcoin is obviously quite new to Vietnam. Only a small number of Vietnamese people know about bitcoin and blockchains. And i find it's quite weird of Vietnam to ban bitcoin even though it doesn't effect the price much.

There should be more clarification with this news, i got confused when reading some of the posts, there is a point that vietnam is only banning bitcoin as form of payment, but if we look into it, bitcoin is currency, and it should be used as payment. I think further research should.be done, and if the case Vietnam does ban bitcoin as payment, i wonder about the exchanges, since bitcoin will become an asset only, instead of being as currency as well. We need to receive more information about this news

Vietnam banks are forbidden to use virtual currency of bitcoin
Because it can affect them, but this is just the law of the bank, not of the government Shocked Shocked Shocked
