Samsung has turned 40 phones into a bitcoin mining rig.

In the age of digital technologies, everything develops at the speed of lightning. This is especially seen in devices, where even the coolest and newest device turns into something only a little bit better than a calculator. Most of us have our own device cemetery somewhere in the closet or elsewhere.

Therefore, it is quite a hot-button issue to turn them into something new, in order to make this junk useful again and maybe even profitable. That’s what Samsung did.

I doubt if they will be able to be successful in contributing any hashing power, using phones. When computers and GPUs have been rendered ineffective by ASICs, what can the processing power of old phones do?

it is doubtful if their old smartphone can mine bitcoins, with that array of 40 phone doesn't seem enough for a profitable mining but i bet other mineable altcoins can do the job or any altcoins that supports non-ASIC mining or the so called ASIC-proof mining like the Cryptonite and equihash mining algo. This could be a good modeling concept for bitcoingold mining rigs, but the problem is , if you are a miner , how to collect those working Samsung junkies ?

Mining using old Samsung smart phones are better used on CPU mined cryptocoins like Aeon. I also posted about this a few days ago in the Aeon announcement thread and smooth looked interested and bullish about it. I reckon he might have already made contact with the people behind https://galaxyupcycling.github.io/

In case anyone does not know, smooth is one of the developers behind the success of Monero.

the thing most of these crappy articles fail to mention is that this was more of an advertisement of Samsung's smart phones which the company itself did to show how powerful their phones are. they connected 40 Galaxy S5 phones in a structure that only "they can build" and run a code through all of them, and they in fact got some hashrate to mine bitcoin with, nothing efficient though. just an advertisement.

@pooya,, exactly even the tittle will make sense that this are just any marketing and advertising strategies from a well known brand of gadgets who have tremendous failure after controversial battery explosions issues this past few years if I remembered it right.. This is nothing but a stunt and not a profitable options for any person in doing so..

I believe so that this is just an advertisement of their product. Since cryptocurrency is getting the attention then they want to use this opportunity to advertise their products. Though it may be hard for an ordinary person to mine using these smartphones nowadays but there is a possibility that it will be easier in the future seeing the advancement of the technology. There are other coins that can be mine using the smartphone but then some are still complaining that it makes their phone too hot and make the parts to melt so they just stop it. Maybe some companies can find ways to make smartphones be a true mining rig in the future.

Yes, it looks doubtful, but I think it is going to be like a first step for Samsung about mining, every new version of a smartphone will bring in itself something newer and better quality app. In any case it's just a plan, this new gadget wil not see the light after all necessary tests will pass.

I don't think that's a profitable bitcoin miner just using some old smartphone of Samsung Galaxy S5 if only that it could have powerful hash then that it's a good one rig I think. But I think there will be some issues that could arise from it for example if they will overheated since the batteries of it is not that high compare to rigs or other equipment that is good for mining bitcoin. I know this is a good idea of Samsung but somehow it doesn't mean it is good to be one.

I have yet to see any algorithm you could run on a smartphone in a somewhat profitable way. And that's not even taking into account the negative effect this would have on the battery... Smartphones are not made for continuous high performance.

I recall there is a way to connect Sony Playstation3's together to make a really powerful computer.

Quote
(Phys.org)—About the 33rd largest supercomputer in the world right now is the US Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL) newest system, which has a core made of 1,760 Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) consoles. In addition to its large capacity, the so-called "Condor Cluster" is capable of performing 500 trillion floating point operations per second (TFLOPS), making it the fastest interactive computer in the entire US Defense Department.

@pooya87. There are some people who are not as skeptical as you. They can advertise their brand all day if they want to, but if old smart phones can be used to mine altcoins more efficiently at less cost, then I do reckon they should advertise Galaxy Upscaling more.

But if you are not interested, ok. But cryptocoins like Aeon could really use something like it, not only for mining but also for running full nodes. It would be a good science project for hobbyists.

i have nothing against them because of advertising their product.
all i am saying is that the 90% news articles talk about it as if it is going to be a common thing to create a mining rig with Samsung cell phones. but in reality it was just advertising the power of these phones and of course the "Up-cycling" thing.

and what people miss is that they say it is more efficient that a PC and NOT more than an ASIC.
someone broke down the numbers:
Quote
It looks like the Samsung rig is doing about 2600Kh/second at about 4W per phone. This is a hash rate of 1538.46 J/GH.
In comparison, the Antminer S9 will do 13Th/sec for about 1275W. This gives a hash rate of 0.098 J/GH.
In essence, an actual bitcoin miner is about 15,000 times more efficient. I'm all for recycling, but this is not an effective solution.
Why not release the documentation for the displays for use in other products, or release technical documentation for other parts of the board? This would be a much better step in recycling instead of building an anemic space heater with bitcoin.

@pooya87. I understand your argument but you are still thinking about bitcoin mining. I am thinking about how useful this is for Aeon mining and running full nodes.

But I reckon the article writer also made a mistake by featuring bitcoin. He should do more research on good CPU mined coins.

I was thinking the same thing. It's a cool concept, but I don't think phones have enough power to mine, or else someone would've figured it out already and has been doing it. Everyone would be doing it if that were the case.

Mmmmk so what's the point though? You'll melt an old phone's CPU and get a dollar worth of Bitcoins for it. Great. Why not just sell your phone and buy an outdated ASIC? You'd get 10,000x the hashing power for the same amount of electricity.

40 pcs of Samsung S5  combined to mine bitcoin, this is purely an advertisement and is not profitable if ever it exist.
How much will 40 pcs of S5 cost just to build this and will the hash rate be as much as an ASIC machine probably not. But the cost for you to build it might be more that an ASIC miner. It may consume less electricity but can solve less blocks.

Samsung did that for publicity stunt and nothing else. Please don't even think about mining bitcoins with your mobile. If you mine bitcoin with your mobile may be your next generation will get one fourth of a bitcoin. What I meant was it will take ages for you to mine bitcoin using your mobile gpu. Mining bitcoins with gpu itself is not profitable. Then how can you think about mining bitcoins with mobile gpu?

the thing most of these crappy articles fail to mention is that this was more of an advertisement of Samsung's smart phones which the company itself did to show how powerful their phones are. they connected 40 Galaxy S5 phones in a structure that only "they can build" and run a code through all of them, and they in fact got some hashrate to mine bitcoin with, nothing efficient though. just an advertisement.

I am sure that Samsung is just riding the cryptocurrency bandwagon and wants bigger sales from people who are already into the cryptocurrency thing. Or maybe it can really be use for mining but not for Bitcoin and maybe Samsumg is planning to introduce their own version of cryptocurrency more of a token and anybody can mine them using their phones. Companies right now are looking at many ways to they can exploit the new market provided by the crypto revolution.

They have not turned all of their devices into the stuff for mining. They speak only about Galaxy 5. What is curious, Samsung company has already presented a mining farm, which is built from: forty used mobile devices! They say that 8 Galaxy 5 phones will be more efficient for mining than a computer. However, who uses computers for mining now?
