some background on my system

amd 6990, running at 890/1250 (overclocked bios)

vddc is 1170 (reduced from 1175) temps are at 103/95degC (from cgminer)
room temp is ard 27-28degC.

cgminer version is 3.2.1

ati drivers version 11.4

I noticed everytime I try to run it at 900 or 895mhz on gpu, the cgminer client seems to hang or stop mining after a few mins. rest of my system is responsive and I can restart cgminer again but problem comes back as well.

What's the reason(s) for this?
gpu clock speed too high? or vddc too low?

Those temps are HIGH. AMD only rates their GPU cores for 85C max. I would redo the thermal paste on your cards to lower the temps and make sure the heatsink doesn't have any dust in it. Doing both of these things on my 7970 lowered my core temp by 13C and my VRM1 (the VRMs that provide voltage for the GPU core itself) temp by 15C, and this is without a cure time.

oops

anyway I've set it at auto fan speed and 880/1250 so the temps are back at 81/95.5degC

fan speeds are probably at 100% now

1 thing i dont understand is, it shows
GPU 0 80.0  30%
GPU 1 95.0   5000rpm

what is 30%??
why is there such a  temp difference between both cores?

My hypothesis is that one core gets the cool air from the fan, the other core gets the air that's already been heated by the first GPU core. Either way, it's still high. I'd set the fan speed to max at first, if you can handle the noise, great, leave it there. But monitor the temperatures first, and if you can't handle the noise, then slowly lower the fan speed, but keep it so that neither core goes above 85C.

Also monitor VRM temps, those might be too high too. Monitor them with GPU-Z, which can be downloaded here. http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

the 6990 has a central fan so by right both gets equally cooled air.

strangely, the gpuz doesnt like cgminer or vice versa
when i start gpuz while cgminer is working the whole system freezes.

Well, my bad. I was thinking of something else...

There might be dust in the heatsink, or too much thermal paste on one GPU core, explaining the difference in temperatures.

Try starting GPU-Z before running cgminer and see if that works... if it doesn't, well, another way to monitor temperatures is HWInfo32 http://www.hwinfo.com/download32.html or HWInfo64 http://www.hwinfo.com/download64.html, depending on whether you have a x86 (32-bit) or x86-64 (64-bit) operating system. If you don't know, go with HWInfo32, since it'll work on x86-64 too.

Claymore miner  works perfectly fine, but when i start SGminer or CGminer they do not want to start.
This is only a recent issue, they were working fine, but a couple of days ago they dont work anymore.
I have used -T and --verbose to try and give more information as to why they failed.

I dont know what is going on and how this s all of a sudden started. Its really ridiculous.

Doesnt matter what SGminer or CGminer i try they dont work anymore/ Doesnt matter what pool i connect to for whichever coin/algorithm.

I dont know what the heck the problem is here really.

I have just run amdcleanuputility and re-installed non-whql-win7-64bit-radeon-software-crimson-16.11.2-nov4.exe

any takers?
