A study by Cornell University showed a positive dynamics in the scalability of the Bitcoin network

A new study of the Cornell University team, which includes Adem Efe Ganser, Sumiya Basu, Ittai Eyal, Robbert van Rensse and Emin Gun Sier, showed that Bitcoin could increase its block size while maintaining the same level of decentralization that it had in 2016.

The group showed that the network capacity increased during the period from 2016 to 2017 year, during the study, the authors stated:

"One of our most interesting discoveries is that the Bitcoin network has improved significantly in terms of the bandwidth provided. The results show that the Bitcoin IPv4 nodes that are used to connect to the network have an average throughput of 33 Mbit per second in 2016, in 2017 year they had an average throughput of 56 Mbit per second. In other words, the bandwidth has increased 1,7 times a year. "
