There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

This really depends on purpose. Since you mentioned convenience, you may want to get a software wallet like Electrum. Some software wallets have cold(offline) storage provisions. Hardware wallets like Trezor or Ledger cost atleast $50-100. You can also get a paper wallet but that's for storage only.

All of the Bitcoin local/offline wallets are free I think and you can download it also for free so there is no hassle for your part in paying some dollars on it, maybe you are pertaining to the Bitcoin hardware wallets though. I would like to suggest using Electrum wallet because that is the one that I am using for a long time and for me it is so convenient to use even though all offline wallets are design to be convenient maybe I just get used to it.

If you don't want to spend any money then I would recommend you Electrum. You don't have to download the whole Blockchain (data of every transaction on the network) and it's fairly easy to use. If you are going to buy at least 1 BTC then you should consider buying a hardware wallet. Ledger Nano S is the cheapest wallet on the market and it supports a lot of altcoins. I have bought it some time ago and I'm satisfied. Probably, I will switch to Trezor T.

I will suggest you to use Electrum wallet. It's free of cost and lightweight. You don't need to buy that wallet and the best part is that, you don't have to download the entire blockchain in to your laptop to clog the disk space. Just download and install. That's it! It is very convenient to use. You can send bitcoin to multiple people on one go using this wallet which adds to the convenience. However, if you just want to safekeep your bitcoins, use a paper wallet. That's only for storing though.
