Windows. Heh. Odd, it worked for at least 2-3 start ups and now crashes.

Also when I switched over from using the old version of namcoind to the QT client I had to re-download the
blockchain. I don't recall why.

should maybe check log..   i've been testing heavily and not had a problem...
you didn't run both at once?

you can try -rescan

or.. see if everything works ok after redownloading blockchain if you deleted last one

I will do a rescan and report back.

edit: Rescan then same error messages. Looks like it crashes just after it downloads all the new blocks.

Trying a whole block chain download now.

edit: Crashes immediately. Client window doesn't even come up.

I think I got it. I removed all the port numbers from all my config files a week ago so the clients would just use the port it wants use.

Process monitor says that namcoin-qt wants to use port 8334 as the comm port. I had it set as my rpcport in the config file.

I've seen this error in the Mac build. It's happening because some code is trying to reserve a lock that's already been deleted during shutdown. It's pretty much harmless, because it happens long after the database has been closed and detached, but it's annoying.

I implemented a workaround for it in the latest Mac build, and will contribute the workaround to the main project today.

Has anyone ever built on windows? Or are all the windows builds cross compiled on Linux?

Installing Qt4.8.4 on windows is pure pita. Needs a completely outdated, "rare" gcc version.

Qt 5 would be much easier as it has mingw included, did anyone try? Not so easy I assume.

.bit's would be really cool if it wasn't so damn hard to setup. there are no working browser apps and foxy proxy doesn't work either.

Just wondering why nobody mentioned the easiest and most obvious method for browsing .bit domains.
On a standard Windows 7 or XP or on a Mac it's just a few mouseclicks (in an unrestricted user account, of course):


Windows 7:
Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing > Connections: Local Area Connection > Properties > IPv4 > Properties > Use the following DNS server > 178.32.31.41

After that you can use any standard browser (not sure about Chrome) for looking up .bit pages.
A few examples of sites with some useful content for a start:

This IP 178.32.31.41 is khal's DNS from the List of DNS Servers in the wiki. I don't think khal makes use of your browsing behaviour data in any way. But even if he did, the DNS server only gets the HTTP requests and your IP address. It doesn't receive any web content or user credentials, as far as I know.

Did some testing and I must say I am quite impressed. Everything went smoothly.

One important thing: There should be a reasonable txfee set by default. Maybe 0.01. This allows miners to increase fees without disturbing newbies.

On the firstupdate screen: The warning about the 12 blocks should be in red (If people simply turn off the client they might loose the name/domain).

The status of domains with name_new only is not clearly visible. OK, the expires column is empty but maybe it should say "preregistered" or something so that it is clear that you do not yet own the name/domain.

Not important:
name_new from namecoind is displayed as hash/random in the transaction list.
name_firstupdate from namecoind seems to create a duplicate entry

These all worked fine:
sign, verify, dumpprivkey, encryption, name_new, name_firstupdate, wallet encryption (both gui & namecoind)

Waiting for firstupdates and doing some more playing testing...

i try this but only shows 1 name_new and 1 firstupdate in gui (i used namecoind to name_new, then name_firstupdate after a few blocks)..

then later opened qt and was ok..

I though it would make the hard changes (change dns server to 127.0.0.1) itself, but it seems to not be the case...

We are working on an easy solution but it'll work with firefox only for now.

all you do is install the program

replace the config file that phelix linked in that thread

go to your network adapter and change dns to 127.0.0.1

it works..

seems as fast as any other big blockchain coins to me.. (maybe a bit slower)

during the time qt consumes a lot of system resources (more than by running and is almost freezing everything) but its ok for now. i know that the qt is under developing and that it needs time. ill be patient

With my new setting on a new computers virtual environment it is running now super fast.
AMD-70 Ubuntu 12.04 basic system -> allocated for VirtualBox machine 1 processor core and 512 Mb RAM and installed Xubuntu 10.04 -> on Wine started the compiled Namecoin client for windows
It is running much faster than on the old computer with native windows XP. No crash at all. Starting and stopping in seconds.
