I still think "legendary" (your original idea) is the best so far.   Maybe "Supreme Member"?

I too think veteran gives the wrong impression and doesn't sound right for what it really is.

But grandmaster and Supreme Member sounds a bit off as well.  Like I need to join a lodge or something.  lol.

I added a new Legendary membergroup with a yellow coin. I am completely open to the possibility of changing both the name and the coin color if people don't like them. In particular, if people find that threads are now too "glittery" with all of the yellow coins, I will remove the color or make it more subtle. If you think that some other color would work better, download the legendary.gif image, modify it with your color, and post your modified GIF image. Don't change anything but the color of that one region in the image, though. (I make these images by opening the image in GIMP, selecting the colored region, and then using the Colorize tool.)

To make things more fun, the Legendary membergroup has no universal activity requirement. You are guaranteed to become Legendary somewhere between 775 and 1030 activity, but the exact point in this range at which you become Legendary is random per user.

I can see that type of bet being fun
Counter versus freedom since were actually pretty close in terms of activity only one period difference although that result won't be known for another 8.5-9 months at minimum ^^.

As an aside I'm curious if there is a way to see how many legends there are but when I sort by group it only shows Sr.Members and lower in the position tab after VIP and Staff ranks any quick way to check that up.

Yellow isn't visible in this forum theme. Either you will have to change the theme in new forum(which isn't good, IMO ) or please change the color which is visible and catchy till someone make better one than that.

Nah, that'd significantly complicate things. Currently this randomness is done with a single SQL query, which is very convenient.

The required activity level per user is suitably random for betting, but anyone who can read my code (there are a few such people) will be able to exactly predict when someone will become Legendary, so I don't really recommend it.
