I am a senior at an IB school in Italy. I was asked to bring up a project to develop the school and create profit in a sustainable way. The idea is to make an investment for solar panels on the roof to sustain a room of anti miners maybe s9. The panels could be reused in the long run to reduce the school's electricity cost while the daily income of the miners could go to fund medical research and give primary education to children around the world. The point is that I am unsure of what to mine and how this would come along.
What do you guys think?

And that should be another consideration is the productive period of the tool you use. ASIC miner (in this case antminer S9) can only mine coin with SHA 256 algorithm, and after its productive time is gone, you will only keep it in the warehouse. Mining with GPU I think has a longer lifetime, because many choices of coins that can be mined. And after its productive time is gone, you can use as computer part or sell it back, because the price will not fall too high in the market.

Solar panels does not worth to set up for mining. It is too expensive to product electricity for miners. you need High energy to operate antminers.

It will be a big investment and very long ROI. But if it is for educational purpose then go for it as long as student will learn from it first hand.

Just remember that you will have an intermittent source of power (sun) because of night time, weather conditions like during cloudy/rainy/snow/typhoon..you will not produce that much electricity. Consider also energy storage for your solar panel like battery, thermal storage system that will store excess electricity you produce that can be used when there is no or limited sun power.

It should be a big roof and plenty of solar panels to reduce the school's electricity cost. Another factor is that solar panels should be very cheap.
Be aware that Antminers like s9 use around 1300 kWh that's a lot.
But otherwise, the project with solar panels is not so co-effective like it seems to be.
Maybe you could get sponsorship from your country or from some investors that want to donate to a school that way you could make your project more effective.

I wish you luck with your project.

The ROI on solar panels is way too much to make it an interesting idea, especially if combined with battery installation to feed the miners 24/7. You're looking at 7 years minimum, double if you need battery storage.
Might be enough to please the teachers but not an actual practical/economical idea, unless there was already a plan of installing solar panels. Even then you'll need a huge installation before its even worth it, and in case your mining is not profitable in 2 years you have a case of overproduction, selling back to the grid makes you next to nothing.

IMO Solar heat can generate power but not enough for bitcoin miners. Plus there's no guarantee you get it everyday because it should definitely be dependent on the weather. But it is cost-effecient I believe.

depends on how many solar panels do you use and how much power to use. If we compare, by calculating all the parameters correctly, it shouldn't be a problem with this

It makes better sense if you can only sell the electric produced at wholesale and are paying retail rates for mining. (That is if you plan on doing both either way)

It's possible but mining energy efficient altcoins makes way more sense. In fact, I recently put together a solar powered altcoin mining setup to help a friend of mine.

I use cryptocurrency and solar power to help my best friend Naomi Wu... And I'm proud of it!

"SOLAR Can't produce enough power..."****

That's true (currently), but the focus should not be to power miners through solar power alone. The solar power should be thought of as a way to subsidize your energy costs. It may be particularly effective in areas that charge different amounts per kW/hr at peak hours of the day.

Solar power used to charge something like the Tesla Home Battery could provide a measure of energy savings for SOME people. However, the increase in start-up costs for any type of solar energy operation makes the return-on-investment demands so high that it simply isn't feasible for most people.

If you're able to find donors or investors to get something like that off the ground, you may have a shot at at least breaking even, but it will be exceedingly difficult.

Off topic... who in the world is the girl in the far, upper-left of that twitter page background. Lord...
My friend Naomi Wu, an artist whose works involve DIY electronics and/or 3D printing. She also hosts an awesome TV show.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh_ugKacslKhsGGdXP0cRRA/videos
https://twitter.com/RealSexyCyborg/status/932136250454163458

The bit where I used my solar mining setup to help her was in response to the following event:
http://www.newsweek.com/naomi-wu-sexy-cyborg-misogyny-silicon-valley-704372
https://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=5046

Back on topic, cryptocurrency mining and solar power generally don't mesh well for a number of reasons. One of them being that solar is best where electricity is expensive while mining is best where electricity is cheap/free. Another being that solar is a long term investment while mining is a short term investment.

I use cryptocurrency and solar power to help my best friend Naomi Wu... And I'm proud of it!

I have one project for mining based in vibrations.

The secret is to use the diversity of frequancies and through of a smart designer increase the energy received. That is possible.

I'm a quantum physicist and i know how to do that.

Having installed a roof-based solar system, I would have rather bought BTC and waited for a year.

It's nice as an idea and will work if you have your solar panels installed already. However setting up solar panels, getting your interter installed, purchasing and setting up your S9 miners.

Count the money - not worth it.
