I made a deposit to bittrex roughly 7 hours ago and the transaction still has no confirmations

The mempool is being flooded by network spam transactions again. So expect your transactions to be confirmed longer than usual, sometimes it will take days.

If you really need your transaction to be included in the next block you can use a transaction accelerator like this one, https://pool.viabtc.com/tools/txaccelerator/

The reason might be the drama between bitcoincash and bitcoin talk. couple of days back the number of unconfirmed transactions exceeded 160000. Now it has become better than earlier. when you are doing a BTC transaction make sure you use a higher fee

When do unconfirmed transactions get abandoned?  I have had two transactions sitting unconfirmed for 4 days now.  There is really no hurry for them to confirm but I've read variously that they will eventually be dropped from the mempool and the funds "returned" to my wallet - how long does that take?

Normally they will drop in about 3 days, but sometimes there are nodes rebroadcasting the transaction and then it can take much much longer.

don’t worry Number of unconfirmed transaction down from 170k to 98k (after huge spam happen to bitcoin network).

so it may take longer than normal (it take about 1 day and 6 hour for my last transaction ) so if try to reduce number of new transaction  this days (Max week)and ask users in service to accelerate your old one

It would really be advicable to first check the mempool everytime you make a transaction on Blockchain.info's site here https://blockchain.info/charts/mempool-count

A good no. of unconfirmed transactions to send some coins, with cheap fees, and a 10 - 20 minute waiting time for the first confirmation, would be under 5000.
