Well bitcoin is the prime of all crypto currency out there and alt coins are copy that has been popping out there in the exchanges,market.
Alt coins have different usage depending on there purpose but primarily bitcoin has the usage of all the alt coins.

Bitcoins for me is like the main cryptocurrency and the other stuff are like the name itself alternative because altcoins is simply alternative coins.
